V CLARA S. SUKEFORTH, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
KEY-FASTEN ER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 6, 1911.
Application filed January 23, 1911. Serial No. 604,177.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARA S. SUKEFORTH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Key-Fasteners; and
I do declare the following to be a full, clear,
and exact descriptionof the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in key fasteners.
One object of the invention is to provide an improved form of key fastener which will be simple, strong, durable and inexpensive in construction, efiicient and reliable in op eration and which may be quickly and easily applied to any form of knob or key.
With this andother objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a side view of the inner side of a portion of a door showing the application of the invention to the knob and key thereof; Fig. 2 is a central vertical section of the same; Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the fastener.
My improved key fastener is preferably formed from a single wire rod bent midway between its ends to form a hook shaped loop 2 which is adapted to be engaged with the usual opening in the end or handle of the key. After-forming the loop 1 the ends of the rod are bent laterally in opposite directions and at right angles to the sides of the hook thereby forming shoulders 2 which are engaged by the handle of the key after the hook 1 has been engaged therewith there by preventing the key from being turned in the lock. After forming the shoulders 2 the ends of the rod are bent upwardly at right angles to said shoulders as shown at 3. One of the ends 2 is bent at right angles 7 near its upper extremity as shown at 4 and in the end of said right angular bent portion 4 is formed a hook or loop 5 which provides a keeper for the upper extremity of the opposite ends 3 said end being adapted to be sprung into and out of engagement with the loop or keeper 5 to permit said upwardly projecting ends and right angularly bent portion of the fastener to be engaged with and disengaged from the shank or stem of the door knob.
In the application or use of my improved fastener the hook shaped loop 1 at the lower end of the fastener is hooked into the eye or opening in the handle of the key which has been turned in the lock to bring the handle and ward of the key in substantially horizontal positions. When thus engaged wit]* the eye in the handle of the key said handlv will engage the square shoulders 2 which will prevent the key from being turned to a vertical position in the look so that the ward of the key cannot be turned into alinement witl" the key hole thus preventing the key from being pushed out of the look from the outside of the door. After the hook 1 on the lower end of the fastener has been thus engaged with the key the upwardly projecting ends 3 are unfastened and sprung apart thus permitting said ends to be engaged with the shank or stem of the knob whereby the fastener is held in operative position.
A key fastener constructed in accordance with my invention will be inexpensive and may be readily carried in the pocket and quickly applied to or removed from the key and knob of the door when desired.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted'to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention as defined in the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is: j
A key fastener formed from a single wire rod bentmidway between its ends to form'a hook shaped loop adapted to be engaged with the eye or opening in the handle of a key, shoulders formed in said rod adjacent to the hook shaped loop and adapted to engage the handle of the key whereby the latter is prevented from being turned in the lock, spring knob-engaging ends formed on my hand in presence of tWo subscribing Witszud fastener and a keeper formed on the nesses.
extremity of one of said ends and adapted to be engaged by the extremity of the opposite CLARA SUKEFORTH' 5 end whereby said ends are detachably en- Witnesses:
gaged With the stem or shank of a door knob. R. LOUISE SUKEFORTH,
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set JOHN WV. VVATT.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, Washington, D. 0.
