Description
AI P.A DUSTIN.
DOOR HANDLE.
(No Model.)
d UNITED STATES ATENT f OFFICE.
ALLEN F. D'STIN, OF HILLSBOROUGH BRIDGE, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
DOOR-HANDLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 560,697', dated May 26, 1896. Application filed December 28, 1895. Serial No. 573,695. (No model.)
To all whom iv' may concern: 4
Be it known that I, ALLEN F. DUSTIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hillsborough Bridge, in the county of Hillsborough and State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Handles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which4 it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in door-handles; and it has for its object, among others, to provide a simple and cheap handle readily applied to any door, and which will be so constructed as to avoid any danger of catching or tearing of the clothing thereon.
It has for a further object to provide a readily-applied handle by which the latch may be operated from either side of the door, and has the latch -moving lever or fingerpiece located within the body of the handle.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a perspective view showing the application of my improvement. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the handle removed. Fig. 3 is a face view thereof. Fig. et is a view of the interior of the lock. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the finger-piece and latch. Fig. 6 is an enlarged vertical section through the device applied to a door. u
Like letters of reference indicate like parts in the several views.
Referring now to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a vportion of a door, in the edge of which is a socket or mortise a, into which is designed to fit the lockcase B. This case contains the latch C, against the rear end of which bears a spring D to normally force it outward, and the inner end of this latch or bolt is designed to move in a suitable guide c within the case.
E is a slide mounted to move within suitable guides e on the inner face of the case, and
within this slide moves the latch or bolt, which is provided with a lug f, having a beveled side f. The opposite faces of the lock-case are provided with the short transverse slots g, intoV which passes the lug or arm G, which is is'V litted to move in a recess c' in the handle I, and from this plate projects the ngerpiece J, which works through a longitudinal slot j in the base-piece of the handle, this iinger-piece being designed to move within the offset K of the handle, where it is out of the way and protected and there is no danger of its catching clothing of a passer-by. This handle is secured to the door by means of screws passed through openings in the lugs at the ends of the base-piece thereof, it being designed, of course, to have a handle upon each side of the door, and the lug or arm of each finger-piece engages behind the slide, and as the finger-piece is moved thebolt is actuated.
Modifications in detail may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
The handles may be as ornamental as may be desired and maybe constructed of any preferred material.
The handle and its base plate may be formed integral or may be constructed of two parts, if desired, in which case the fingerpiece and the arm will be cast together or separate and attached together in any suitable manner. As the finger-piece is moved the arm or lug thereof engages the slide, and as the latter slides upon the inclined face of the lug on the bolt the bolt is moved at right angles to the path of said slide.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new isl. Ahandle for a door, comprising the base plate, the handle thereon, the finger-piece working in an offset in said handle and a slide carried by said finger piece and working through a slot in the door to operate thebolt, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a door and the bolt arranged to slide, of a handle secured to the door, a finger-piece mounted to slide through the base-plate of the handle and provided with the arm projecting into the lock-case to actuate the bolt, substantially as described.
3. The combination with a door and the bolt carried by the inner face of the slide H, which y IOO arranged to slide, of a handle secured to the door, a finger-piece mounted to slide through the base-plate of the handle and provided with the arm projecting into the lock-case to aotuate the bolt, and a slide embracing said bolt and adapted to be engaged by said arm, substantially as described.
4l. The combination With a door and L bolt mounted to slide in L recess in the edge thereof and having Ln inclined lug, of a slide elnbracing said bolt and adapted to engage said lug, and L handle secured to the door and having a sliding finger-piece provided with an arm projecting into the lock-case and en* gaging said slide, substantially as described.
5. The combination With L door and a bolt Titnessesz BELMONT E. GORDON, C. P. ROWELL.
