To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, NESTOR LATTARD, of New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Locks, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to an improvement in looks, and especially to an improvement in .locks of the latch type.

The object of this invention is to construct a latch-lock which will be simple, durable, and economic and which may be applied to the leaves of a table, for example, for con necting the leaves, and which when so applied will not in the slightest manner affect the even upper face of the leaves when united.

Another object of the invention is to construct a lock of exceedingly few parts applicable wherever alatch-lock of any description is required.

The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.

Figure 1 is a plan view of the leaves of a table, illustrating two of the leaves locked together by means of the improved lock and a third leaf detached. Fig. 2 is an edge view of one of the leaves of the table shown in Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2, the side or front plate of the lock-casing being broken away.

In carrying out the invention a casing Ais employed, which is angular in cross-section and may be of any desired shape or size and made of any suitable material. The said casing may be said to comprise, therefore, a top plate a and a side plate a, the latter being adapted substantially for engagement with the article having the keeper B of the lock attached. A housing 10 is formed within the casing at the junction of its members. This housing is open at one of its ends, and within the housing a latch 11 is fulcrumed, the pivot of the latch being preferably at one side of its center farthest removed from the head 12 of the latch. The said head is provided with a straight inner face and a beveled outer face. The head is located at the inner end of the latch-bar, and at what may be termed its outer end an extension 13 is formed, which is at an angle to the latch-bar proper and ex tends upward and outward through a countersunk opening 14, produced in the faceplate a of the casing, as is best shown in Fig. 3. The beveled face of the head 12 of the latchbar is opposite an opening 15 made in the side plate a of the casing, as illustrated in Fig. 2, and a spring 16, secured at one of its ends within the casing and bearing at its free end upon the outer edge of the latch-bar adjacent to the head, holds the head normally transversely of the aforesaid opening 15. The keeper B is of the staple type, and is of proper size to enter the opening 15 in the lock-casing and receive the latch-head 12.

In The operation of the lock, when the keeper is forced into the opening 15 in the casing, the latch-head will be raised by reason of the keeper striking its beveled face, and after the keeper has entered the casing a sufficient distance the head of the latch will be forced into the keeper by the action of the spring 16. hen it is desired to release the keeper from the latch-head, the extension or handle end 13 of the said latch-bar is simply pressed inward, whereupon the head of the bar will be elevated and the keeper may be withdrawn.

I desire it to be understood that the latch may be operated through the mechanism of either a push button or knob, or by means of a key.
