SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 352,213, dated November 9,1886. Application filed September 22, T886. Serial No. 214,2l6. (Model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES HARooUR'r WHITE, of the cityV and county of New York, in 4the State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Latch-Locks for Car-Doors, of which the following is aspeciiication. p
In my United States Letters Iatent No.k 325,371, granted September l, 1885, I have shown and described a latch for car-doors and other sliding doors, which comprises a tongue supported by a horizontal pivot,so as te swing in a vertical plane to engage with and disengage from a hook upon the door-casing, handles whereby the door may be moved, and which have a slight swinging movement, and a draw-bar which. forms a connectiou'between the handles and the pivoted tongue, and through which the pivoted tongue may be raised or lifted, so as to disengage itfrom the hook upon the casing. y
The objectof my present invention is to provide, in connection with a latch of the kind above described, a lock whereby the pivoted 25 tongue may be locked againstrising, and thereby held securely in engagement with the hook upon the door-casing.
. According to my invention I prefer to perform the locking of the pivoted tongue, to prevent its rising, `by means of a locking-bolt engaging with the draw-har; but the locking of the tongue may be effected in other/ways. With alatch of the kind above described I also employ handle-plates applied to opposite faces of thedoor, and according to my present invention I make one of these handle-plates hollow, so that it constitutes a casing, within which the draw-bar is arranged, and within which is also arranged a lock for holding the pivoted tongue down or against being lifted.
'Ihe invention consists in novel combinations of parts,which are hereinafter described, and pointed out in Vthe claims.

A designates a portion of a door,having applied to its opposite sides handle-plates B B', which are secured by screws b thereto, and in thesehandle-plates are journaled two handles, C C', at opposite sides of the door, which are connectedfwith each other by a spindle portion, 02. In the edge portion of the door is formed av notch, s, wherein is secured atonguecase, D, similar in construction to that shown in my aforesaid Letters Patent, and within which is arranged a tongue, E, which is mou nt` ed upon a horizontal pivot, c, so that it may swing in a vertical plane, and which by so swinging in a vertical plane is made to engagewith or to disengageA itself from a hook,f, projecting from a plate, F, which is to be secured tothe casing ofthedoor. The door is held closed by the pivot-ed tongue E engaging the `hook f.
G designates a draw-bar which has at one end a pin or stud, h, projecting through an arc-shaped slot, h, into the tongue-case D and engaging the pivoted tongue, and near the other end of this draw-bar is a socket or perforation, h2, which receives a stud or projection, h3, projeoting'inward from the handle C',
and formed integral therewith. The stud or projection h3 works through an arc-shaped slot, in the handle-plate B', as shown in Fig. 2.
From this'description it will be understood that when the handle G is moved in the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. 2 the drawbar G will be moved in the direction indicated by the arrow thereon inFig. l, and will thereby lift the pivoted tongue E out of engagement with the hook f.
I have in Fig. l represented a spring, h5, as bearing against the end of the draw-bar G, and when the handle is released this spring will throw the draw-bar and handle in the opposite direction to that indicated by the arrow.
in Fig. 2, and will throw down the tongue, the movement of the tongue being limited by the stud h or h3 striking the end of the sloth or h4.
In so far as described the latch does not differ substantially from that shown in my afore said patent; but I combine with the latch a lock, whereby the pivoted tongue E may be held against movement and permanently engaged with the hook f whenever desired. I prefer to effect this locking of the pivoted tongue E by means applied to the draw-bar G, as the tongue cannot lift without a corresponding inward movement being imparted to the draw-bar G.
In this example of my invention the handleplate B is hollow, or consists of a shell closed upon the inner side, which cornes next the door, by a false plate, B2, and affording space within it for the arrangement of the draw-bar G and the spring h5.
H designates a locking-bolt, which is guided by a pin or stud, i, engaging aslot, fi', therein, and which is furthermore guided by-projec tions or posts i2, cast within the hollow handleplate B. The sliding bolt Hcarries a proj ection,j, which may engage with the projection j upon the draw-bar G, and said bolt has a notch,j2, with which may be engaged a key inserted through the key-hole j.
In connection with the locking-bolt H, I employ a tumbler, I, which lies parallel with and at the side of the bolt H, and is supported upon the pin z', and also by a projection, k, extending across and resting upon the top of the bolt H. Upon the top of the bolt H is a projection or horn, k', on either side of which the projection 7J of the tumbler I may lie, according to whether the bolt H is moved in one direction or the other. The tumbler I has applied to it a spring, k2, which exerts a constant tendency to maintain the projection 7; in engagement with the projection k.
In Fig. l I have represented the lockingbolt H as in its locking position, in which its projection j' engages the projection j upon the draw-bar G, and thus prevents the lifting of the pivoted tongue E. If it bedesired to unlock the draw-bar, the key inserted through the 'key-holej is turned and comes into the notch ,y'zin the bolt H. The turning of the key lifts the tumbler I so as to carry its projection k above the path of the projection 7c upon the bolt I, and the further turning of the key, by acting in the notch jz of the bolt H, moves said bolt toward the left of Fig. l, and retracts the projection j away from the projectionj on the draw-bar G. As the turning of the key is completed the tumbler is thrown downward and its projection 7c comes upon the opposite side of the projection lc to that represented in Fig. l, thereby holding the bolt against movement toward the right.
From the above description it will be seen that by a very simple construction and combnation of parts I provide a latch-lock of 6o great strength and simplicity, and although it is specially intended for car-doors, it may bc employed for sliding doors in other structures.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination, with the horizontallypivoted tongue and handles of a car-door latch, and a draw-bar connecting the handles with the tongue for lifting the latter, of a lock whereby the tongue may be held against lifting, substantially as herein described.
2. rIlhe combination, with the horizontallypivoted tongue and handles of a car-door latch, and a draw-bar connecting the handles with the tongue for lifting the tongue, of a hollow handle-plate to be applied to the face of the door and in which said draw-bar works, and a lock also arranged in said hollow handleplate, whereby the tongue may be held against rising, substantially as herein described.
3. The combination, with the horizontallypivoted tongue and handles of acar-door latch, of the draw-bar G, connecting the handles and tongue and provided with the upward projection j', the sliding locking-bolt H, having the projectionj for engaging the inner side ofthe projection of the draw-bar when moved to a locking position, and the pivoted tumbler I, applied to said bolt, substantially as herein described.
