SPECIFICATION forming part of LettersPatent No. 739,556, dated September 22,1903.

To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE T. OPLINGER, of Slatington, in the county-of Lehigh and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in Locks; and I hereby declareY that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being hadV to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
This invention is an improved drop-handle lock especially designed for'use on refrigerator-doors and combining the features of a pull, a latch, and lock in one device.
The invention consists in the novel construction of the lock, as hereinafter claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure lis a face view of the complete lock. Fig. 2 is a view thereof with the back plate removed. Fig. 3 is a view on line 3 3, Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 is a detail. Fig. 5 is a det-ail view of a slight modification of the tumbler and means for holding same in unlocked position.
The box-like casing A has projecting perforated ears o: on its ends, by which it can be fastened in position by suitable screws. is closed by aremovable back plate A and on its front are provided forwardly-projecting ears a', between which is hinged the upper end b of the handle or pull B, which preferably has its lower end b weighted, so that it will assume its normal position by gravity. The upper part h of the handle'is provided with an inwardly-projecting lug h2, which engages the outer end of a lug c, projecting from the front face of the latch-piece C, which is pivoted on a pin D and oscillates transversely ofthe casing, having a 'curved catch portion C projecting outwardly through theside of the easing and adapted to engage a suitable keeper. (Not shown.) The lug c is close to the pivot of the latch, so that the movement of the end of piece C will be greater than that of lug c. Lug c extends through an opening 0,2 in the front of the casing adjacent to lug b and in position to be engaged by the latter when the lower end of handle C is drawn outwardly. The latch C is normally forced outwardly (so as to press lug c upward against lug b2) by means of a spring E, which is placed between the side of casing and stem of the latch, having the pivot of thelatch-piece as its fulcrum and its lower end pressing Vagainst a stud or lug e in the casing and its upper end confined in.

Within the casing, at the side of latch C opposite the catch C', is the locking-tumbler F, which is vertically movable and provided with slots ff, engaging studs or pins a3 as in the casing. The lower slot f has an offset f' at its lower end, which is heldin engagement with the pin a3 when the tumbler is in its uppermost position by the action of the dat spring G, as shown in Fig. 2. The tumbler has a projection F on its upper end, adapted to engage and lock the latch-piece when the tumbler is lowered. The tumbler also has a key-notch F2 on its lower end, which is adapted to be engaged by the wing h of a key H, by turning whichV key the tumbler can be raised Aand lowered. When the tumbler is in raised position, as indicated in Fig. 2, by
'turning key H properly the lower end of the tumbler will be tirst forced outward,V compressing spring G and disengaging notch f' from pin a", and then the tumbler is drawn downward into locking position. On reverse rotation of the key the tumbler is raised until notch f is opposite pinf a, whereupon spring G swings the tumbler so as to engage notch f' with pin a4, thereby upholding the tumbler in uppermost unlocked position. It will be observed that in the construction shown the catch is projected by the spring independently of the handle, but is retracted by a pull on the handle. The locking-tumbler is normally left in unlocked position,
