FASTENER FOR THE MEETING-RAILS OF SASHES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 436,116, dated. September 9, 1890.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS BEEOHER, of New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Sash-Fasteners and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with accompanying drawings and theletters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in-

Fig. 3 is a similar view with the device unlocked and'the lower sash raised, this view also showing by broken lines how the strike engages with the inner member of the bolt to automatically relock the fastener.
My invention relates to an improvement in self-locking sash-fasteners, the object being to produce a simple, strong, convenient, and reliable device.
With these endsin view my invention consists 1n a-sash-fastener having certain details of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
The locking-bolt of my improved device consists of two members A and B, the inner end of the latter being pivoted to the outer end of the former, the inner end of which swings on a pin 0 between two upright ears D D, formed integral with the base-plate E,
which is firmly secured to the lower rail F of the upper window-sash. The said members A and B of the locking-bolt will be hereinafter termed the inner and outer members to describe their longitudinal relations to each other, rather than their relations to other features of the device. The lower end of the inner bolt member is provided with an inwardly-projecting locking-finger G, which swings in a clearance slot H formed in the base-plate, and with an outwardly-projecting 5 0 stop-finger I, which engages with a depressed face J of the plate to prevent the bolt from turning too far outward. The outer end of the inner bolt member and the inner end of the outer bolt member are constructed to form a knuckle-joint which limits the inward movement of the Outer bolt member and stops it in position to permit gravity to act in closing it into its locked position. The said outer bolt member is provided upon its outer face andmidway the length thereof with a transverse operating-pin K, which fits, when the said part is in its locked position, into a trans verse groove L, formed in the adjacent face of the inner bolt member. The inner face of the outer bolt member is provided with an unlocking-finger M, by means of which the said part is manually lifted to unlock the device. The two parts of the bolt co-operate with a strike N, adapted to be attached to the upper rail 0 of the lower window-sash, and having an elevated seat P for the outer end of the inner bolt member to rest upon when the same is in its locked position, an
outwardly-projecting ledge Q, to co-operate with the locking-finger of the said bolt member in automatically returning the same to its locked position, and two parallel upright locking-arms R R, rising above the ledge aforesaid, separated to receive the bolt between them, and having their outer faces made straight, their upper ends beveled, and their inner faces undercut and curved, all for co= Operation with the Operating-pin K before mentioned. In the locked posit-ion of the device the inner member of the bolt takes a virtually horizontal position, with its outer end resting upon the seat of the strike. At the same time the outer member of the bolt also takes a horizontal position, and is folded down upon the inner bolt member with its operating-pin K resting against the undercut curved inner faces of the locking-arms. If new attempt is made to lift the lower sash or pull down the upper sash, the pin will be drawn with great force against the said faces of the locking-arms, and the device looked all the more firmly. To unlock the device, the unlocking-finger of the outer member of the bolt is engaged and the said member of the bolt lifted, as shown by broken lines in Fig. 2 of the drawings. This done, and the lower sash being raised, the bolt will be lifted and thrown into the position in which it is shown by Fig. 3 of the drawings, wherein it is shown to be supported by the bearing of its stop-finger upon the depressed bearing-face of the base-plate. The device is automatically relocked, when the sash is pulled down into its closed position, by the engagement of the under face of the ledge of the strike with the locking-finger, whereby the bolt is turned inward on its pin 0, the operating-pin being thrown against the straight outer faces of the locking-arms, and the outer member of the bolt gradually raised as the outer end of the inner member moves inward between the locking-arms until the pin finally rides over the upper ends of the arms and drops down in front of the inner faces thereof, leaving the fastening in the adjustment in which it is shown by Fig. 2 of the drawings.
It is apparent that in carrying out my invention I may make some changes in the construction herein shown and described. Iwould therefore have it understood that I do not limit myself to that exact construction, but hold myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1 In a sash-fastener, the combination, with a locking-bolt consisting of an inner member provided with a locking-finger and an outer member pivoted thereto and provided with an unlocking-finger and pin, of two upright locking-arms separated to receive the bolt between them, the said pin engaging with the faces of the arms to shift the outer member of the bolt from the outer to the inner faces thereof and to lock the device, substantially as described.
2. In a sash-fastener, the combination, with a locking-bolt consisting of an inner member provided with a stop and a locking-finger and an outer member pivoted thereto and provided with a transverse operating-pin and an unlocking-finger, of a base-plate to which the bolt is pivoted, and a strike having an outwardly-projecting ledge with which the locking-finger of the bolt co-operates, and with two upright locking arms separated to receive the bolt between them and having their inner faces undercut to eo-operate with the pin of the bolt to lock the device, substantially as described.
