To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that LVViLLIAM HENRYCQN- RAD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Villiamstown, in the county of Grant and i State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hasp- Locks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompany ing drawings.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in locks, and particularly to astenings for hasps and the like. It 1s used in fastening doors, gates, etc., by providing a hasp with a slot adapted to receive a staple, and, after the hasp has been placed over t-he staple, passing the bolt of a padlock through that part of the staple which projects beyond the hasp. The hasp must be first placed over the staple, then the padlock applied, and, in many cases, the hasp and staple must be held together with one hand while'the lock is placed in position with the other, and even after this locking has been effected, both the staple and the padlock bar are exposed so that it is not difficult to file eithery apart. To obviate these diilicultles locks have been formed immediately upon the hasps and my invention consists in the arrangement of parts in such locks, though, of course, it will be readily understood that the same arrangement may be applied to otherl forms of locks.

The object oit the invention is to provide a combined latch and lock which will possess advantages in points of e'lliciencyl and durability, is inexpensive of manufacture and at the same time is simple in construction and operation.

With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, pointed out in the claims and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved lock showing the application of the same; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the lock with the hasp removed to expose the working parts; Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3 8 of Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2.

Referring more particularly to the drawings 1 indicates a hasp and 2 a staple both of any well known construction. The hasp is provided at one end as usual with a slot 3 for the reception oi' the staple, and with relation to this slot a lock is so placed that its locking bolt 4 passes across it, thus engaging the staple when in position for fastening.

It will be noticed that by reference to the drawings, the lock casing comprises an elongated body portion 5 provided with an angular extension 6 which is recessed on its underside as shown at 7 to receive the bolt 4. The hasp 1 is also provided with an extension 8 coincident with the extension on the body 6 and is recessed as shown at 9 to receive a portion of the locking bolt and the coil spring 10 which is mounted upon the bolt, said spring being disposed between the shoulders 11 and the inner head 12 of the bolt and adapted to normally hold the bolt in a closed position.

It will be seen that the body oi the casing at the intersection oi the extension 6 and the body is enlarged and provided with an arcuate recess 13 to receive the staple 2 and entirely inclose the same. Communicating with (he recess 13 and formed on the underside of the body 5 is an elongated recess 14 adapted to receive the sliding tumbler 15. The tumbler 15 comprises the body portion 1G bifurcated at one end to form the spaced arms 17, and provided at the other end with an elongated extension 18 arranged at one side ot the tumbler and adapted t0 engage in the recess 19 in the head 12 to hold the bolt 4 against movement. One of the arms 17 is provided on its outer side with a plurality of notches 20 adapted'to receive the lug 21 extending inwardly from one side ot' the recess14, said arm being held securely into engagement with the lug by means ot' the spring 22 arranged bet-Ween the arms. The other of the arms 17 opposite the notched arm is provided on its outer face with a shoulder 23 adapted to be engaged by the inner end of the pivoted catch 24 to force the tumbler toward the end of the locking bolt, the end of the extension 18, engaging in the recess 19 to hold the bolt in a locked position.

The body of the tumbler is provided upon one edge with an inwardly extending recess 25 adapted to receive a key which is inserted in through the opening 26 in the casing, the lugs on the key engaging the side walls of the recess to slide the tumbler and lock and unlock the bolt 4. The bolt 4 is provided on its outer end with a head 27 Jforming a suitable finger hold to manipulate the bolt.

From the above it Will be readily apparent that when the hasp is arranged over the staple, the staple protruding through the slot 3 and into the recess 13, the bolt 4: is released, the spring 10 forcing the bolt into position. The catch 24 may be manipulated, if the operator does not happen to have a key handy, to force the tumbler 15 toward the bolt so that the extension 18 Will engage in the recess 19 to hold the bolt in a locked position, the lug 21 engaging in one of the notches 20 to hold the tumbler in its locking position. 1t Will be readily seen that the catch 24 can only be used to lock the bolt and cannot be used to unlock the same.

From the above it will be readily seen that 1 have provided an improved hasp fastener having a lock Which is inclosed in a casing to protect the same from rain or snowT to prevent any of the Working parts of the lock from becoming rusty.

While l have shown and described the preferred form of my invention it Will be obvious that various changes in the details of construct-ion and in the proportions may be resorted to for successfully carrying my invention into practice Withoutv sacriicing any of the novel features or departing` fro-m the scope thereof.

Having thus described the invention what is claimed is:

l. In combination With a hasp, having a slot formed in one end thereof, and a staple adapted to be disposed in said slot, of a casing mounted upon one end of the hasp, a spring controlled bolt slidably mounted in said casing and adapted to be disposed through the staple, a sliding tumbler mounted in the casing, an extension formed on said tumbler and adapted to engage the bolt to hold the same in a locked position, means for forcing said tumbler into itslocking position.

2. In combination With a hasp, having a slot formed in one end thereof, anda staple adapted to be disposed in said slot, of a casing mounted upon one end of the hasp and arranged over the slot, a spring controlled bolt slidably mounted in the casing and adapted to be disposed through the staple, a sliding tumbler mounted in the casing, said tumbler comprising a body portion, spaced arms formed at one end thereof, an extension formed on the other end of the body and adapted to engage the bolt to hold the same in a locked position, one of said arms having recesses formed on the outer side thereof, a lug formed on the cas- -f ing to engage in said recesses to hold the tumbler in a locked and unlocked position, a spring arranged between and bearing against the outer ends of said arms, and

means for actuating the tumbler to lock and j -j unlock the bolt.

3. ln combination With a hasp, having a slot formed in one end thereof, and a staple adapted to be disposed in said slot, of a casing mounted upon one end of the hasp, a i j spring controlled bolt slidably mounted in said casing and adapted to be disposed through the staple, a sliding tumbler mounted in the casing, said tumbler comprising a body portion, spaced arms formed at one n end thereof, a shoulder formed on the o-uter face of one of said arms, a catch carried by the casing and adapted to engage said shoulder for forcing the tumbler into its locking position, a spring arranged between and bearing against the outer ends of said arms and means for actuating the ltumbler and unlocking the same.
