IMPROVEMENT IN DOOR-LOOKS.
TO'ALL WHOM IT MAY CONGERN:
Be it known that we, E. P. PORTER and G. W. HALLETT, of Waterford, in the county of Saratoga, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Locks; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which-` Figure I is a plan view of the relative position of the locking devices, when the bolt is thrown out and locked.

In the lock embraced in this invention, a series of springoatches are so arranged with regard to the bolt of the lock that when the bolt is thrown out they will so interlock or engage with the same as to hold it in such position until, unfastening orireleasing the said catches from the bolt by a suitable key, the bolt is then left free to be drawn in.
A, in the drawings, represents the casing of the lock, B the square bolt, arranged to move or slide in the lock-casing, through a hole in one end, C, of which it passes and projects. This bolt, B, at D is slotted in the direction of and for a portion of its length, by which slot it moves over and upon the fixed key-pin, or spindle E of the back plate G of the lock-casing. H II, a series of catches, each hung upon a fulcrum-pin or contre, I, of the lock-casing, two upon each side of the bolt, along and in the same direction with which they extend. These catches are all of a similar shape or form, which consists in rounding off their ends toward the iixed keypin E in an outward direction therefrom, and in forming at their opposite ends a square-shaped shoulder, J, which shoulder pieces J ofthe two catches, toward the inner end ofthe bolt, lit over such end with the shoulder pieces of the other catches, engaged with the shoulders K, formed by the cross-piece L of the bolt, at or near the end plate of the casing, through a hole, in which the bolt plays or projects. For the two catches of the lock upon the same side of the bolt, a bent spring, M, is provided, that at its centre is fixed in position to the lock-casing, but at its ends is loose, bearing by them against the catches at or near their shoulder ends; the object of these bent springs M being to hold the catches against the bolt, and, when disengaged therefrom by any suitable means, to throw them back linto connection with them. V, a lug on bolt, against which the end portion W of the key, as shown in fig. 4, is to actfor moving or throwing the bolt in or out, as the case may be, of the casing A, when such key is brought to bear against it in the proper direction therefor. X, a spring-catch secured to lock-casing in suitable position to engage with thc bolt of the lock, and hold it when thrown out, as well also as to be acted upon or depressed by the key, when pushed inward, and thus relieved from the bolt previous to its heilig moved or drawn in by the action of the key against the lug ot` the bolt.
iwf Having thus in detail explained the construction and arrangement of the various parts composing the lock, we will now describe the manner in which they operate, and the lock, locked or unlocked: When the lock is to he locked the key is first inserted in the key-hole of its casing, and then turned around until it comes against the lug V of the bolt, as shown by red lines in g. 2 of the drawings, when, turning the key in the same direction to that in which the bolt is to move, the holt is thus thrown out and the lock locked, where, by the springcatches II, which, through their shoulders J, interlock `with the bolt, as has been hereinbef'orc particularly explained, und the catch X, itis held :mii secured, and in such u manner that it cannot be forced or drawn inward until such catches are released therefrom. In unlocking the lock the several atches, H, are released from the bolt by properly bringing the key to beer against them, to turn theiii on their fulerum-pins I, where, by the pins O in the ways R of the bolt, they are held, when, bringing the key against the lug V of the bolt, as shown in iig. 1, and then pressing it inwards suiciently to release the catch X fromthe bolt, by then turning the key in the direction in which the bolt is to move, the bolt will be thus drawn into the lock-casing, as is obvi- .ous without any further explanation.
What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is 1. The spring-catches H, whether more or less in number, in combination with the bolt Bwhen arrangedY together, substantially as und for the purpose described.
2. The catch X, in combination with the bolt B, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
