Description
UNiTE skT LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent No.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, H. D. RUSSELL, of Naugatuck, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Mode of Constructing Locks for Doors and other Purposes, of which the following description, illustrated by the accompanying drawings and references, is sufliciently clear and comprehensive to enable persons of competent ability to make and use my invention.
The nature of my improvement relates to a certain combination of parts, by""`which I more convenient-ly accomplish the object of locking and unlocking the door than has heretofore been done, andalso in providing a new device for moving the bolt or bolts of the lock, by which `I can release the knob by the key allowing it` to be turned at pleasure without affecting the bolt.
Figure l is a side elevation of the lock with the front plate removed and the parts represented in their natural unlocked position. Fig. 2 is the same view with the main bolt made fast, or locked. l
A, A, are the side plates of the lock.
B is the main bolt which is slotted to re ceive the spring Y and the inclosed smaller bolt C, and forked at Z2, b, to receive the stem D as a guide. D has a bearing in both plates and receives the stem of the knob, which is not represented. It is made fast to the crescent disk E pointed at e, e, as represented by dotted lines. The small bolt C has a pin S projecting vertically from its sides both back and front. Upon the door 15,708, dated September 9, 18:56.
knob being turned either point of the crescent E catches the pin upon the back of the bolt C and forms with the inner surface or edge of such crescent an inclined plane upon which the pin slides to draw vthe bolt C, and its attachment the main bolt B made fast to it by being locked by the cross bar F. The form of the cross bar F is fully represented in `both its positions by the drawings Figs. l and 2. It is moved by the key which passes through the openings inthe plate A, at G. When the key is turned the cross bolt F locks between the stationary pins I and J and prevents the main bolt from being operated by the smaller bolt C. The knob is allowed to revolve at all times when the door is locked in consequence of the front pin S rising upon the inclined plane at z' and thus preventing the point of crescent from catching S upon the opposite side of C.
We have in this arrangement but one spring and but one bolt used for the purpose of catching or locking the door.
I claim- Liberating the knob and its stem from all connection with the main bolt in freeing the crescent plate E, by the movement of the smaller bolt C, as specified produced by the cross bar F or its equivalent operated by the key of the door, the whole constructed and arranged substantially as set forth HENRY D. RUSSELL.
