Be it known that I, JAMES HAGGART, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Fastening for that Peculiar Kind of )Window- Sashes known as French lVindows; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the construction and operation thereof, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, of which- Figure 1 is a front view of the fastening as Xed upon the sash with the rod thereof in view and in a closed position; Fig. 2 a transverse section of the rod with the arm handle and catch. Fig. 3, a transverse section of one end of the rod and the snail catches thereto attached. Fig. 4 a front view of a section of the sash with the rod embedded therein and covered with a thin Fig. 5 a transverse section of the rod and handle as constructed when the rod is embedded in the sash andcovered by a plate; and Fig. Gis a front view of the socket plate into which the catch is inserted.

This fastening consists in part, of a vertical metallic rod A, B, which is attached to the centerward side bar of a hinged sash by staples or straps-and terminating in a snail catch (C, Fig. 3) at each end and this catch occasionally takes to a small staple (I) attached to the window frame or casement above and below, over which the sash passes, it the sash being cut out sufficient to allow it to pass over the staples freely, so

staples are flush with the face of the sash; to the central part of the rod is attached an arm D by which the position of the rodis occasionally changed, and to the end of which is attached a handle and catch (E and F, Fig. 2) whereby the arm is occasionally made fast to the socket plate G G, which is permanently attached to the centerward side bar of the sashv which constitutes the other half of the window, the catch F entering the socket and being turned by the handle E is made fast. The snail catches on the ends of the rod and the staples at the top and bottom are so adjusted that when the arm D is in a position nearly at right angles with the face of the sash the bit or shoulder C of the snails will freely pass the staples, but by turning the handle toward the socket the shoulders of the snails take hold of the staples and the sash is made fast.

In Figs. 4 and 5. is represented a slight variation in the construction of the fastening whereby7 the rod is embedded within the sash and concealed from view by a narrow plate in front. This variation being fully illustrated in the drawings requires no further explanation.

Nhat I claim as original and desire to secure by Letters Patent, are- The arm D with the handle and catch E F in combination with the metallic rod and the catches, as herein described.
