EDWARD WICKS, OF BROOKLYN, NEW' YORK.
DOOR-CHECK.
SPECIFCATION forming part of Letters PateI-"t No. 390,274, dated October 2, 1888.
Application filed July 13, 1886. Serial No. 207,865.
To all whom. it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD Wicks, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, and a resident of the city of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and Slate of New York, have in vented a certain new and useful Safety Stop and Lock for Doors,
` Windows, Ste.; and I hereby declare the following to be a description of said invention in such full, clear, concise, and exact terms as to enable any skilled person to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
The chief object of my invention is to provide a safety stop and look for use, separate or combined, of strong and simple construction, novel shape, and especially safe.
In the drawings, Figure l shows a plan of the stop and lock combined. Fig. 2 shows a central section of the same, and Fig. 3 isa diagram showing its operation upon an open door.
The stop consists of a T-shaped bar, A,with narrow shank B, hinged at C upon a plate, D, fastened upon .the door or window frame or other fixed object I, so that the narrow shank B will swing in between the companion catches G G upon the plate E, correspondingly fastened upon the door orwindow or other object H, moving open. The length of the 'narrow shank B will of course depend upon the proximity ofthe plates D and E, and the closer together they can be put conveniently the less opening will be required to bring the broad T- bar A within the catches G G, which contain the bar, and effectually prevent any one pushing it out. When the door H is opened to the limit ofthe stop, the top or arms J J of the T- bar hold against the catches G G and the door may be left in such open position with perfect (No model.)
safety. The material used may be varied and ornamented to suit particular tastes and uses.
The lock consists of the catch F upon the plate E, fitted to enter and engage the slot K in the T-bar A when the door is closed and the bar Hat againstit. Figs. l and 2 show this operation most plainly. These slots may be placed in a series along the bar with advantage where the vmoving object slides and different degrees of opening secured.
The stop and lock may be used together in combination, as shown, or only the stop may be used and the lock omitted, as desired.
Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. As a safety-stop for doors, Windows, Sac., a T-shaped bar with narrowed shank hinged upon the fixed object, in combination with two straight rigid catches with inturned ends, one on each side of said bar, and fixed upon the moving object at an outward angle of about forty-five degrees, all constructed and co-operating in the mannerand for the purpose substantially as specified.
2. As a combined safety stop and lock for doors, windows, ne., a T-shaped bar with narrowed shank hinged upon the fixed object, in
combination with companion catches at an outward angle, and a single catch at right angles between and behind the others, fixed upon the movingobject, said bar being provided with a single slot or series of slots along its length, adapted to lit over and hold against the single catch, in the manner and for the purpose substantially as specified.
