DOOR-FASTENER- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 2, 1907.
Application filed October 8, 1906. Serial No. 338,090.
To all who/7'2, it ntcty concern:
Be it known that I, IRA A. FLEMING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Union City, in the county of Mason and State of lVashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to means for secur ing the door of an apartment, and is of special advantage and particularly adapted for travelers use to enable securance oi the door in addition to the usual fastening means.
The fastener is portable and may be carried in the vest-pocket or stored in any small place and is adapted for instantaneous use and may be applied to any door.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the specification, Figure 1 is a sectional view showing the application of the fastener to a door and its casing. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the bar or plate provided with the engaging spur and longitudinal slot and having the latch-plate pivoted thereto. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the key.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same The fastener comprises a plate or bar 1, which has a longitudinal slot 2 formed there in and provided at one end with a spur or catch 3, which is sharpened so as to readily penetrate-the jamb of the door-frame. A latch-plate 4 is pivoted to the end of the plate or bar 1 opposite that provided with the spur or catch 3 and is formed with a finger-piece5 consisting of an extension having its outer end rolled or bent outward to form a lateral extension to be gripped between the thumb and finger of the hand. A shoulder 6 is formed at each side of the finger-piece 5 and is adapted to enter one of a series of cuts 7, provided along an edge of a key 8, the finger-piece 5 serving as a stop to limit the downward movement of the latch-plate at its swinging end after the shoulder part 6 has been engaged with a cut of the key 8.
The key S is flat and tapered in its length and is provided along one edge with a series of cuts 7 of a width to snugly receive the outer end of the latch-plate 4C. The key 8 is flat and tapered in its length and is provided along one edge with a series of cuts 7 of a width to snugly receive the outer end of the latch-bar 4. The key 8, is adapted to be thrust through the slot 2 of the plate or bar 1, so as to sit crosswise of said plate and have one end engage the door-jamb and the opposite end extend across the path of the door, as indicated most clearly in Fig. 1. After the latch-plate has been passed through the slot 2 it is held in position by turning the latch-plate 4 so as to engage with the cut 5, registering therewith after the key has been mo ed to a position so as to engage with both the door-jamb and the door, To prevent loss or displacement of the key, it is provided with an opening at the larger end, and the plate or bar 1 is similarly provided with a like opening, a short length of chain, string, or the like being passed through said openings 'to' secure the parts 1 and 8 without interference with their free manipulation when it is required to fasten a door. To use the fastener, the latch-plate is thrown upward, and the end of the plate or bar 1 having the spur or catch 3 is placed against the side of the door-jamb rabbeted to receive the door, the spur or catch being placed against the rabbeted portion of the jamb. Upon closing the door the plate or bar 1 will be forced laterally and cause the spur or catch 3 to enter the doorjamb, after which the key 8 is thrown through the slot 2 so as to engage with the door-jamb and the door, after which the latch-plate 4 is swung downward to cause a shoulder portion 6 to enter a cut 7 of the key, thereby preventing displacement of said key. By having the latch-plate formed with two shoulders 6 the fastener may be adapted for either a right or a left hand door as will be readily understood.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. A door-fastener comprising a plate having a laterally-extended spur at one end and formed with a longitudinal slot, a latch-plate pivoted to the opposite end of the plate and formed with a linger-piece and shoulders at opposite sides of said finger-piece, and a key adapted to pass through the slot of said plate and having a series of cuts extended inward from an edge to receive a shouldered portion of said latch.
2. A door-fastener comprising a plate hav- 1 piece serving as a stop to limit the swinging IO ing a laterally-extended spur at one end and formed With a longitudinalslot, a latch-plate pivoted to the opposite end of the plate and having a finger-piece and a shoulder adjacent to said finger-piece, and a key adapted to pass through the slot of said plate and having a series of cuts along one edge .to receive the shouldered end of the latch-plate, the fingerof the latch-plate in one direction by coming in contact with said key.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
