Description

D. L. BARBER.
DOOR HINGE. APPLICATION FILEDSEPT. 1. ma.
Patented Jan. 30, 1917.
FIGLI x l r DALE L. BARBER, OF HABLAN, IOWA.
DOOR-I-IIN GE.
Application filed September 7, 1916.
To all fr0/0m t may concern:
Be it known that I, DALE L. BARBER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Harlan, in the county of Shelby, State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Hinges; and I do hereby decla-re the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the saine.
rllhis invention relates to a door hinge.
The object of this invention consists in the improvement of door hinges by means of which a door may be instantlyT hung, and which is furthermore so constructed that the door may be as quickly removed, and in this connection, the invention also contemplates the improved construction of hinges which automatically lock the door in place after it is hung.
With these and other objects in view, such as will appear as-my description progresses, my invention comprises the combination and arrangement of parts as set forth in and falling within the scope of the appended claim.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is an elevational view sho-wing the hinge in place on a door and jamb only portions of the said door and jalnb being shown however; Fig. 2 is an edge elevation of the hinge; Fig. 3 is a section on line of Fig. 1, and Fig. t is a section on line A-l of Fig. 1.
In the drawing I haveillustrated a portion of a door 1 and a jamb 2. Secured to the. door l, by suitable fasteners 3, is a hinge plate el. with which a second plate 5 is hingedly engaged. In order that this plate may be secured to the jamb 2, detachably, I have provided a rectangular housing 6 in which the plate 5 is adapted to slide, which housing is secured to the jamb 2 by suitable fasteners 7. The housing 6 is provided with a hollow rib 8 while the plate 5 is provided with a similar rib 9 which slides Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 30, 1917.
Serial No. 118,904.
within the rib 8. A leaf spring latch 10 is secured, at 11, to the rib 8, is provided on one end with a. finger piece 12 and between its ends with a catch 13, which catch is provided with a cam surface and an abrupt surface and is normally pressed through an opening in the rib 8 by the resilience of the spring 10 and into a recess 14 in the plate so that 'the said last mentioned plate will be retained within the housing G and prevented from accidental displacement therefrom. It will thus be seen that the hinge plate A may be secured to the door permanently and the housing O secured to the j amb. The plate 5 may be engaged within the housing at the will of the operator or disengaged therefrom so as to permit the removal of the door.
While I have illustrated and described a particular embodiment of my invention, it has merely been for the sake of convenience and I do not wish to be limited to that particular embodiment as it is obvious that numerous changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the spirit of the invention or exceeding thie scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is In a hinge, the combination with a hinge plate, of a second hinge plate associated therewith, a housing into which said second plate snugly fits, said housing having a hollow rib and said second hinge plate having a similar rib slidable in the first mentioned rib, a spring secured to the outer face of the rib on the housing and having a catch eX- tending through an opening in said rib and normally extending into a recess in the rib on the second mentioned hinge plate.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
DALE L. BARBER. litnesses LEILA BARBER, DELMAR ANDERSON.
