ATTUR/VEYS nmlfns, wAsmNGroN D c CHARLES W. LENT, 0F TINGLEY, OWA.
DOOR-SECUREB.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 4, 1910.
To all lwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES XV. LEN-T, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Tingley, in the county of Ringgold and State of lowa, have invented a certain new and useful Door-Securer, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to securers for doors, windows and the like, and provides a securer adapted to be quickly applied to closures, for holding the same in a locked position.
My invention is more particularly adapted for securely locking doors, and embodies two plates movable relative to each other, one of the plates being provided for insertion between a closure member and the frame thereof, and equipped with suitable gripping means for holding the same in place, while the other plate is adapted to be engaged by the tiret-named plate by means of a lug on the second-named plate engaged by a locking means on the first-named plate, the second-named plate having a stop flange thereon adapted to engage the said closure and securely hold the same in locked position.
My invention further embodies novel features of construction as will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly set forth in the appended claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a fragmentary sectional plan view of a door and the frame thereof and showing my invention attached to the frame and in the initial position for securing the door. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary sectional plan view of a door and the frame thereof, showing my invention attached to the same and engaging the door to hold the same in locked position. Fig'. 3 is a perspective of one of the plates partially comprising my invention. Fig. 4 is a perspective of a second plate partially comprising my invention. Fig. 5 is a side view of the screw bolt adapted to hingedly secure the two plates embodied in my invention.
My door securer comprises a gripping plate 1 having at one end thereof projecting pointed lugs 2. The other end of the gripping plate l is turned inwardly so as to form a bearing 3 for a screw bolt 4 which passes therethrough and hingedly secures the plate 1 to a second plate 5. A hole 6 is provided in the plate 1, and adjacent thereto a cam 7 having a handle 7L is pivoted to the plate by means of a pin 8. The second plate 5 hinged to the plate 1 by means of the screw bolt 4 passed through bearings 9 and 10 in the plate 5, and the bearing 3 on the plate 1, is provided with a lug 11 and a stop liange 12 as will be clearly seen `by referring to Fig. 3.
W7 hen it is desired to apply the door securer for locking a door 13 hinged to a frame 14 at 15 and provided with suita-ble knobs 16, the gripping plate is placed against the door-jamb 17 with the gripping lugs 2 pressed into the door-jamb 17 to hold the plate l in position. The door 13 is then closed. This forces the lugs 2 still deeper into the door-jamb 17. Then the plate 5 hinged to the plate l is swung around so that 1t engages the plate l, the lug 1l on the plate 5 passing through the opening 6, and the stop flange 12 engaging the door 13, as will be clearly seen by referring to Fig. 2. The cam 7 is then manipulated so as to engage the lug l1, as will also be seen by referring to Fig. 2. The door is now securely held in a locked position and can only be opened by disengaging the cam 7 and the lug 1l and swinging the plate 5 outwardly, away from the plate 1. The hinge member 3 is preferably elongated to permit of the screw bolt 4 secured to the locking plate 5, by bearings 9 and 10, to move or slide longitudinally of the plate 1, as well as being hingedly secured to the said plate.
TWhen it is desired to repeatedly use the door securer on the same door, a rectangular plate 18, having an elongated slot therein is provided, to be secured in the door jamb. Then when the securer is applied the holes first made by the gripping points 2 can be easily located and used again, thereby obviating the necessity of making new holes for the gripping points 2.
It will be understood that although I have described my door securer as applied to a door, it can be conveniently used for various cllcsures such as windows, cabinets and the li ie.
Having thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
A door securer comprising a gripping plate for insertion between a closure and the frame thereof, gripping niean's'int'egial with the said plate t'or holding the saine in position, and a locking plate mounted to turn and to siicle on the said gripping plate, a hook-shaped lug on the said locking plate engaging the gripping plate, a cam on the Said gripping plate engaging the Said hookshaped lug and securely holding the same, and means on the Said locking plate engagl l l ing the said closure for securely holding the 10 saine in 2L looked position. 'i
In testimony wheteof I have signed my naine to this specification in the presence of two 'subscribing Witnesses.
CHARLES WV. LENT VitneSSes E. W. REYNOLDS, LUKE SHAY.
