IMPROVEMENT IN s'HUTTER-BowERs.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 208,937, dated October l5, 1878; application filed June 20, 1878.

To all 'whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, THEoDoRE THORN, of St. Clair, in the county of Schuylkill and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sl1utter-Bowers, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

The object of my invention is to provide a shutter bower or fastener which will secure and fasten a pair of shutters or double doors so that they cannot be opened from the outside, and also hold them securely open, either partly or fully, as may be desired, which object is attained by the use, in novel combination, of two sliding bars, one sliding Within the other, with suitable hinges and fasteners, as shown in the drawings, and hereinafter more fully described and claimed; my invention as now presented .being an improvement on the invention for which Letters Patent No. 198,166 were granted on the 11th day of December, A. D. 1877.

In the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters of reference indicate like parts, Figure l is a front view of my invention; Fig. 2, a section through the linew m, and Fig. 3 a section through the line o c.

A represents a sliding bar itting into the bar B, and having holes Gr G in it. B is a bar having turned-over edges, so as to hold the bar A, which slides in it. C C are portions of a hinge, which may be made to work in screw eyes, or as a regular pin-hinge. E is a springfastener, which secures and holds the two bars A and B together. Above and below E are lugs E2 E2, through which a pin passes, which pin, also passing through E, pivots it. The spring H throws the back end of the fastener E up, and depresses the locking lug or bolt E3, which fits into the holes G Gr. D is a sliding band, which, being slipped over E at El, disen gages the fastener, and allows the bar A to slide in and out of B freely.

The shutter-bower is operated as follows: The bars A and B are hinged, at C C, to a pair of shutters on the inside, the bar A sliding' into the bar B. The shutters are then bowed as desired, and the lug E3 on the fast-ener E is forced by the spring H into one of the holes G G in the bar A, thus securing the bower and holding the shutters in position. To release the shutters the fastener is pressed down at El, and the bars will then slide easily, al-v lowing the shutters to be opened or closed. The band D may be used at any time when it is desired that the bower be inoperative by simply slipping it over E at E'.

It will be observed that this invention embodies the principle of my invention for which Letters Patent No. 198,166 were issued; but the mode of operating is simplified and the fastening made much more secure.

In the drawingI show, to the left of the fastener E in Fig. 1, how the bar B is slotted out and the spring H put in to operate the fastener.' In long bowers for very wide windows I place two or more fastenersl at different points on the bar B, so as to allow the shutters -to be bowed close together or be held wide open rmly and securely. The shutterbowers answer the full purpose of shutterstays, holding the shutters wide open, as well as serving for a fastener when they are closed or bowed.

I claim as my invention- The combination, in a shutter-bower, of the sliding bars A and B, working in hinges at C C, the fastener E, operated by spring H, and having a locking lug or bolt, E, which engages in holes G G in bar A, and the sliding band D, for holding thefastener E open, substantially as and for the purpose hereinbefore set forth.
