IMPROVEMENT in sass FASTENERS.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, I. W. JU-DD, of New Haven, in the county of New Haven, and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Sash Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear,
and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and repa'escnt, in'
Figure 1, a jamb of a window, with my fastener attached, for upper and lower sashes.
Figure 2, a backside view of the upper fastener; and in Figure 3, an end view of the same.
My invention is designed to support and lock in any given position either the upper or lower sashes of a window, or both, accordingly as they are applied, and consists in the arrangement of a lever upon the jamb of a window, in combination with the fastener, constructed and arranged so as to be operated by the said lever; and that others may be enabled to construct and apply my improvement, I will proceed to fully describe the same, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
A is the window jamb; B, the groove in which the lower sash runs; ,0, the groove in which the upper sash runs; and D, the guide between the two. This is the common and well-known construction for window frames. E is the fastener plate, to which the fastener or bolt F is fixed, more clearly seen in fig. 2. The fastener or bolt F is fixed to or made a part of the shaft G, which said shaft is supported in bearings A on the said plate E; and on the said shaft is fixed a coil spring, I, the tendency of which is to turn the bolt F out from the plate E, as seen in fig. 3, denoted in black. Upon the opposite or inner end of the said shaft is fixed a tail-piece, L, by which the bolt F may be turned inward, as denoted in red, fig. 3. The said shaft G is of sufiicient length to bring the tail-piece L into the jamb A, and so as to project therethrough. On the said jamb, upon a pivot, R, I hang a lever, S, the shorter arm T of which (denoted in dotted lines in fig. 1) is forked to receive the inner end of the tail-piece L, so that, by the movementof the lever S from the position denoted in black to that denoted in red, the bolt F will be turned back, as .denoted in red, fig. 3, which will permit the sash to pass freely up or down; but when left free its natural position is as denoted in black; and in this position the bolt F, resting in a notch in the sash, will hold the sash in that position, in like manner as "the common window fastener or spring. The form ofythe bolt F must be in accordance with the sash .whi ch it is required to secure, whether the upper or lower. I cover the forked end of the lever by a plate, U,secured to the jamb in any convenient manner. To the lower end of the lever S I attach a knob, W, by which the said lever is moved. Bythis construction of the spring, and the arrangement of the lever S, in combination there with, the bolt is operated very easily, and the lever, with its plate U, is far 'more ornamental than the ordi nary projecting spring. I v
Having therefore thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters'Patent, is I The shaft G, bolt F,-spring I, and tail-piece Ir, constructed and combined as herein described, in combina tion with the lever S, as set forth.
I. WM. JUDD. Witnesses:
JOHN E. EARLE,
