. K.. BREGKENRIDGE, OF WEST MERIDEN, CON
Leners Patent No. 61,708, and February 5, 1867.
IMPRVED SASH LOCK..
TOALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it'known that I, K BEcKENnIDGE, of West Meriden, in the county of New Haven, and State of` Connecticut, have inventeda newimprovement'in Sash Loek; and I do hereby declare the following, when' taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be' affnll, clear, and exact .description'of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in- I i v Figure 1,11. top view.
Figure 2, a side view.
Figure; a.. front view; and in p Fgrurel, a section taken on line z 1v, tlg. 1. v
The object of this invention is to produce a lock4 for securing the two sashes of a windowv together, and so that'the lock cannot be operated upon from the outside, and consists in thear'rangement of "a spring which serves at the. same time both as the latch and as a spring'to hold the lever irmlyvin its proper position; and to erzablenthers skilled in the art to construct and use my improvement, I will proceed to'describe the same as illustrated in the accompanyihg drawings. V
A is the upper rail of the'lower sash,` and B the lower rail of the upper sash. C is the lock plate fixed to` the upper sash, and `D the keepervxed'to the lower sash. E vthe lever attached to the plate C by, and so as to tn rn upon, a pivot F. On the under side-of the lever is formed a projection, a, 'which when turned to the postomas de notcd in figs.v 1 and4, bears against a ledge, d, on the keeper plate D, to hold the two sashes together. Over the said lever isplaced a spring, G, formed from sheet metal, its rear e'ndv rest-ing upon the rear end of the lever, as seen in tig. 4, and formed with a slot at c, so thatthe forward end of the lever, formed as at H, passes up through the said slotand so-that the spring rests upon avshoulder gn the lever, as see fig. 3. The head of the pivot F rests upon and bears the spring onwto the lever, yet leaving suicient play for theNm operatiorr'of the lever, as denoted in the drawings. The projecting lip on the end H is formed to prevent the spring from being raised too high.V The outer`end of thespring Gr is providedrwith aykno'b, I, or other convenient device, by which to operate the lock. Thus arranged it will be evident thatvthe spring G,- thns borne upon the lever E, holds vthe said lever firmly in its position, and yet permits vits easy turning. To make the lock thus constructed more secure and so that it cannot be operatedupon by burglars from'the outside, I form the front edge ofthe keeper with a notch,f, (see fig. 3,)v and upon one or both sides an inclined plane, so that asthe lever and spring are turned, as from tllepositiou in red, tig. 1, to that denoted in black, or as from that in flg. 3 to thatdenoted in figs. 2 ard-, the spring Gr will ride upon thc incline and falll inte the notehf, from whence it cannot be'turnd until the spring is raised therefrom, and therefore cannot be operated upon from the outside. 5 If preferred' the spring G may be formed as seen in 5, and slotted as seen in tig. 6, so as to. push back, as denoted 'in red lig. 5, to be released from the keeper instead of being raised as described. i I do not wish-to be understood as broadly claiming a sash fastener -constructed so as to be locked-A by a l notch in the keeper, as such -constructions are common and well known, but in every case the lock is formed by the lever itself falling into`th'e notch; but having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire toA secure by Letters Patent, yis l The combination of the plate C, thelever E, and the spring G, with the keeper D, when the said springGr is applied to and operates upon the said lever E, substantially as set forth.
E. K. vBREGKENRIDGE.
