Description

@anni entre CHARLES J. SMITH, OIF NORFOLK, VIRGINIA.
Letters Patent No. 101,322, dated March 29, 1870.
IMPROVEMENTS IN BOLTS FOR SAFETY-STOVES FOR CARS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent`and making part of the same.
To all 'whom 'it may concern'.-
Figure 2 is a plan view of the slotted bolt-casing, detached.-
Figure 3 is a plan view of the disk-plate, detached.
My present invention is an improvement on the fastening for safety-stoves, embraced in and which is .distinctly covered by the second claim of my patent of June 29, 1869.
The fastening, as claimed in the patent referred to, consists in cutting a slot in the casing or shield in which the bolt works, and providing the bolt with a swinging weighted handle, the same being so arranged that after the bolt has been inserted in the cap or staple, the weighted handle, by its own gravity, falls. The bolt can only be withdrawn or returned to the casing by bringing the handle on a line with theslot in the-casing.
My present invention consists in` securing to the casingor shield a circular plate or disk, which, like the easing, is also slotted. This disk or plate is so vpivoted as to turn freely, and is secured at such position on the casing as to prevent all lateral movement of the handle ot' the bol-t, except when the plate o r disk is so turned as to bring its slot directly on a line vwith the slot of the casing, when, by lifting the handle so as to enter the slots, the bolt can be drawn back.
Tov enabley others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A represents a section of a safety-stove, designed chiefly for railroad cars, stealnboats, 85e. To the stove is hinged, inthe usual manner, the door A'.
B represents the ordinary .casing or shield-attachment, in which works the bolt G. This casing is slotted at b. f
G is the bolt, and has secured to it a handle, D.
This handle D is provided with a Weighted knob, d, which causes it to fall, byits own gravity, so soon as lthe bolt C has been secured in the staple or cap B.
E is a circular metal plate vor disk, and is pivoted to the casing or shield at e.
This disk or plate E is provided with a slot, Ef. The dimensions of this slot, like the slot b of the casing, are such as to allow of the free movement ofthe handle therein when it is desired to withdraw the bolt.
The operation is as follows:
The door being fastened, by the bolt C having been pushed into the staple or cap B', as clearly shown in. iig. 1, the disk o r lplate E isthen turned or falls, since it also may be weighted, to the position shown in fig. 1.
To withdraw the bolt, in order to open the door, you have simply to turn the disk or plate E until the slot E is brought immediately over the slot b, when the handle, being lifted on aline with the slots, can readily be pushed laterally, which will return the bolt,
withdrawingthesame entirely from the cap or staple B. I
Having thus fully described my invention,
What I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
The combination of the slotted plate or disk E with the sliding bolt and swinging weighted lever or handle D, as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence o'f two subscribing witnesses.
