HENRY BUDD AND SAMUEL W. BUDD, OF PIIILADELPHIA, PENN- SYLVANIA'.
Letten's Patent No. 86,641, dated Febo-awry 9, 1869.
The` Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom. t 'ma/y concern.
Be it known that we, HENRY Bunn and SAMUEL W. BDD, ofthe city and county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new .and useful Improvement in Dead-Latchesg, and we do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof; reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, and tothe letters of reference marked thereon.V
The object of our invention-is the construction of a cheap latch, that possesses all the requisite properties of a morecostly one.
For the accomplishment of this end, we makek the bolt and ratchet-stop in a single piece. We also dispense with the ordinary spring connected with4 the ratchet, by the peculiar construction and arrangement' of a spring in relation to the combined bolt and ratchetv stop, so that it is made to have a longitudinal Ybearing upon the' bolt and a lateral bearing upon, the ratchet, holding the latter either right or left, as may be re.- quired, in either position into which it is brought.v
The construction and operation .ofthe improved latch are fully explained in the following description.
In the accompanyingv drawings, which make a part of this speciiicationv Figure 1 is a plan ofthe latch with the cap-plate D removed.
Figure 2 is an edge view of the combined blt B and ratchet-stop C.
Figure 3 is a face view ofthe capplateD.
Figure t is a perspective view ofthe spring E.
Like letters in all the figures indicate the same parts.
A is the case;
VB is the bolt; and
Instead of the latter being pivoted to the former, as
in the ordinary construction', we cast the two in one piece, thereby simplifying the construction, whereby the cost of the latch is reduced, besides making it less liable to get out of order. l
The combined bolt and latch is shown in detail in figs. l and 2.
D is the cap-plate, which is shown detached in iig. 3. E is a wire spring, which is shown detached in iig. 4.
' The tube-part of the' spring fits on the stud F of the face-plate a of the case A, and when the 4spring is sprung 'into its place, the end, l, bears against the eontiguous end ofthe case A.
v The end, 2, ofthe spring has a double, incline, which bears against the double inclines of the lug b, lon the bolt B.
i -When ,the ratchet-stop C has not a fixed connection.
groovec, of the end of the case A; .but when theratchet is brought into a fixed connection with the case, as represented by red lines, the incline, 5, of the spring, is brought to bear against the incline,.6, of the lug b, so as to hold the catch in its fixed position 'until it is changed by hand.
In all the positions of the bolt, the spring, as will be observed, has a forward pressure, as Well as a lateral one, and performs the double function of a bolt and a ratchet-spring'.
Having thus described our invention,
What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is.- -v
Thecombination and arrangement of the spring E ivth'the case A and combined bolt and vratchet-stop B C, substantially as described, and 'for the purposes specified.
In testimony that the above is our'invention', We have hereunto set our hands and affixed our seals, this 8th day of August, 1868. 4
. SAMUEL W. BUDD. [1.. s.]'
