TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

Be it known that I, HENRY ROTHIELDER, of'tne city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Key-Attachment to Watch-Gases; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a side elevation of this invention.

Figure 2 is a section of the same, the line at 90, fig. 1, indicating the plane of section.

- This invention consists in arranging the key which serves for winding up a watch in the handle of the watch-case, where it is retained by the ends of the ring, which spring into sockets in the sides of the key, or by any other suitable fastening or catch, in such a manner that when the key is inserted into the handle it is securely retained in its place, and when it is desired, said key can be readily removed from the handle and used for winding the watch. The key is constructed of two parts, viz, the barrel, with its shank and head, and a sleeve, which is fitted on the square shank of the barrel in such a manner that the barrel has a slight longitudinal motion in the sleeve, which latter is retained by the ring, and the key can thus be used to operate the spring-catch, which'retains the cover of the case when the same is closed.

A represents a watch-case, made of gold or any other suitable material, in the usual form or manner. Its handle B is bored out to receive the key C, which serves to wind up the watch. This key is constructed in two parts: its barrel a, which is provided with a square shank, b, and head, 0, and a sleeve, 41, which is fitted on the square shank b, as shown in fig. 2 of the drawing. The sleeve d isprovided with two small socketse in its sides up the watch; and when this operation is performed, it can readily be replaced in the handle, and it is not liable to get lost or mislaid. It is obvious that any other fastenin or catch may be used to retain the key in the handle, but I use by preference the catch above described, since it can be easily made and conveniently operated.

The shank 6 has a slight longitudinal motion in'the sleeve d, and the inner end of the barrel bears against a spring,f, which represents the spring-catch that serves to retain the cover of the watch-case when the same is closed. By pressing on the head a of the key, the spring is made to release the cover and the case opens. By this arrangement the double object of the ordinary key and of the trigger, which serves to open the cover in an ordinary watch, is combined, and the key is always on hand and not liable to get lost or mislaid.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. Fittings. watch-key in the handle of a watch-case, and retaining it therein by a suitable catch or fastening, substantially as described, so that said key is not liable to drop out spontaneously, but can be taken out and used like an ordinary watch-key 2. The sleeved, in combination with the key C, handle B, and springf, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
