TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, J. A. lIAMANN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Watches, and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
The present invention consists in so constructing the pendant of a watch as to receive and hold the key alapted to such watch, whereby the key is always at hand when to be used for winding the watch-movement or setting or adjusting its hands; and, furthermore, the socket of the key cannot become clogged or stopped up with dirt, &c., this invention being an improvement upon one described in another application for Letters Patent made by me, and now on file in the United States Patent Oifice.
In the accompanying plate of drawings my improvement in watches is illustrated- Figure 1 being a section of a pendant of a watclrcase, taken in a plane corresponding with the ring or circular shape of the case; and
Figure 2 a transverse section of the pendant and a portion of the watch-case.
A, in the drawings, represents the pendant of a watch-case, B. This pendant, in the direction and for the whole of its length, is bored out of a diametercorresponding to the external diameter of the spindle of the key which it is to receive or hold, where, by means of a spring-catch, (1, secured in one side of the pendant-bore, it is held. This spring-catch locks into a notch, 19, of the head or cross-piece c of the watch-key, which is elongated in the proper direction to allow of an inward play of the watch-key suificient to produce the disengagement of the catch-spring 1), from the cover-plate to the dial-Face and crystal of the watch; the key acting upon such spring through a shouldered pin or stud, E, secured thereto, and extending up partially through the bore of the watch-pendant, as plainly shown in both figures of the drawings. With a pendant adapted to the reception of a watch-key, and provided with a spring-catch to hold or fasten it therein. as has been hereinabove described, many important advantages are secured, among which may be here mentioned that the key is always at hand, and the socket or bore of its spindle cannot become clogged or stopped up with dirt, which is unavoidable if the key is carried in the pocket, thus not only preventing niuch annoyance, but also much injury to the watch movement.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as en, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The pendant A, having secured to it the spring-catch ('1, in combination with the key G, and shouldered pin F, constructed and operating as described for the purpose specified.
2. The. key C, with elongated notch b, in combination with the spring-catch a, secured within the pendant A substantially as described, for the purpose specified.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this Tth day of November, 1866.
J. A. HAMANN.
