Description

1. 0'. HART.
PUTTY KNIFE. APPLICATION FILED APR, 21, I9
,285,697. Patented Nov. 26, 1918.
a wuwwtoz UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JACOB O. HART, OF LANCASTER, PENNSYLVANIA.
PUTTY-KNIFE.
Application filed April 21, 1917. Serial N 0. 163,653.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JACOB O. HART, a' citlzen of the United States, residing at Lancaster, in the county of Lancaster and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Putty-Knives, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawin s.
lhis invention relates to certain improvements in putty knives, and it is an object of the invention to provide a knife of this general character having novel improved means whereby the sprigs may be handled with convenience and facility and whereby a sprig may be applied in operative position without the necessity of a hammer or the like.
This invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved putty knife whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure l is a view in elevation of a putty knife constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention, and
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, B denotes the blade of my improved knife of a conventional type. The outer or free end of the blade is magnetized and the outer edge is provided entirely therealong witha groove 1.
The outer end of the handle H has embedded therein a screw 3 or other member, said screw bein also magnetized. It is also preferred tiat the outer face of the Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each. by addressing the Specification of Letters Patent.
screw or more particularly the head thereof be substantially flush with the adjacent end of the handle H. In practice a sprig will be readily drawn within the groove 1 of the blade B by the magnetism of the outer end of said blade, and with the sprig so held by the blade it will be at once self-evident that the same may be forced within the work without the necessity of a hammer or other implement.
The magnetized screw 3 or the like affords a means whereby loose sprigs may be readily collected as it is a well known fact that it is a difficult matter to pick up glazier sprigs by hand and especially when the same are lying upon glass.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a putty knife constructed in accordance with my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which its parts may be assembled, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof; and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice, except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim:
As a new article of manufacture, a' putty knife including a flat blade having its outer end portion magnetized, the outer edge of the blade being provided with a groove extending substantially and entirely along the outer edge of the blade, said groove being adapted 'to receive a marginal portion of a glaziers sprig.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JACOB O. HART. Witnesses:
