PENCIL-ERASER.
Specification of Letters Patenta.
Patented Nov. 12, 1907.
Application filed J nuary 12.1907. Serial No. 352.031.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, BnRNARn A. PAYsoN, a subjectof the King oi Great Britain, residing at Tyrconnell. in the Province of Ontario and Dominion oi' Canada, have invented new and' useful Improvenents in Pencil- Erasers, of which the following is a specification. i
This invention relates to pencil erasers, and one of the principal objects of the same is to provide means for adjusting the rubher. eraser tip at the end of the pencil to conpensate for the wear of said tip..
Pencil erasers as usually employed `and Secured to the end of a pencil are very liable to become detached and lost, and moreover when detached are only replaced with considerable diliiculty. 3 15 It is the purpose of ny invention to provide means forsecurely holding the eraser tip to the pencil, and to permit the tip to be adjusted as it is worn away.
Another olojectof the invention is to provide simple means for connecting and adjusting the tip.
These and other objectsnay be attained by means of the Construction illustrated in the acconipnnying drawings, in which:
Figure l is a side elevation of a pencil provided with i curing the eraser tip in adjusted position. Fig. 4 is a vertical sehtional view similar to Fig. 2, and showing a is a sleeve 2, said sleeve having oppositely disposed vertical slots 3, said slots having a. plane vertical wall 4 and a. series of upwardly projecting hooks 5 said hooks projecting in opposite directions within the slts 3, `as shown more particularly in Fig. 3. An ordi 'derstood from the foregoing.
nary rubber pencil eraser is provided With a pin 7 near its lower end, said pin extending through the tip G and through the slots 3 in the sleeve 2. As shown in Figs 4 and 5 inplace of the pin 7 oppositely disposed holding devices 8 are provided, said holding devices having oppo'sitely disposed barbs 9 and a head 10 form'- ing finger holds for adjnsting the eraser tip 6 within the sleeve 2.
The operation of my invention may be readl-y un- Whenever it is required to adjust the tip 6 within the sleeve 2 it may be pulled outward and slightly turned until the ends of the pin 7 or the shank portions of theholders 8 are disposed against the vertical wzlls 4 of the Slots 3. When withdrawn the required distance. a slight turn of the tip 6 will engnge the ends of the pin 7 or the shani: portion of the holders 8 with a pair oi the oppositely disposed hooks 5, as Will he understood. I
From the oregoing it will be obvious that iny invention is of siniple Construction, can be quickly adjusted to conpensate for the wear of the eraser tip, will prevent tle loss of the tip from the sleeve. and can be applied to pencils of any character.
I It will be noticed that the pin 7 projects beyond the sleeve 2 at opposite sides thereof to provide finger holds for turning the tip within the sleeve for adjustrnent. The heads 10 of the pins shown in Figs. 4 and 5 also serve the sane purpose.
