ALBERT s. TUCKER,
Patented May 31, 1904.
PATENT OFFIC O DALLAS, TExAs.
. COMBINED PENHOLDER AND ERASER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 761,428, dated May 31, 1904.
Application filed Ilovember 13,1903. Serial No. 181,083. (No model.)
170 (LZZ whom, it may concern:
1 Be it known that. I, ALBERT S. TUCKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dallas, county of Dallas, and State of Texas, have I invented a certain new and useful Improvement in a Combined" Penholder and Eraser, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relatesto' a new and useful improvement in a combined penholder and eraser, and has for its object to provide an article of this description in which the penholder is made of two parts, one part having secured thereto a steel blade to be used as an eraser, the other part of the holder being tubular, in which .the eraser normally fits.
With these ends in view this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claim.
In order that those skilled in the art to.
which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same, the construction and operation will now be described in detail, referring to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved penholder; Fig. 2, a side elevation of the pen-. holder with the two parts separated, the tubular part being shown partially in section; Fig. 3, a side elevation of the upper part of the penholder looking at right angles to that of Fig. 2; p
A represents the lower portion-of the penholder, in the lower end of which the pen B is designed to be held in any suitable manner. The upper portion of the part A is formed tubular, as represented at A, a distance from the upper end downward.
0 represents the upper part of the penholder, which may be made the same diameter as the lower part or slightly larger, if desired. The lower end of the part G is reduced, as represented at C, so as to fit tightly into the tubular portion A of the part A. Into thelower end of this reduced portion 0 is secured theeraser-blade D. Thus when the reduced portion C is fitted into the tubular portion A the eraser-blade will lie within thetubular portion, and thus be out of sight and protected from damage, and the penholder can be used as an ordinary holder and will not be unsightly in appearance. The .upper end of the part 0 is shapedso as to form a burnisher E, and after the paper has been scraped by the eraser by rubbing this burnisher over the place scraped the'paper may be given a finish,
'so that the ink will not run in writing over the erased portion. made of a hard substance, this burnishing end E'may be formed with the holder; but when the penholder is made of a substance not suitable for burnishing this end could be tipped with a hard substance, such as bone, ivory,
' glass, or porcelain.
The advantage of my invention is that I combine a pen and eraserall in one article without enlarging the penholder or making the same unsightly. As articles are now made it is necessary to have a sheath for the blade when the article is carried in the pocket or even when used on the desk, and in writing with apen when a mistake is made the eraser is often not at hand, and being a separate article is aptv to-become .mislaid; but with my invention having the article a part of the penholderthe article is always at hand and can be quickly used and replaced.
Of courseI do not wish to be limited to the exact construction here shown, as slight modifications could be made without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful is In a device of the character described, a tubular portion, a section having a reduced lower end fitted in the said tubular portion, and having its opposite end tapered on two sides, the said tapered portion being of greater widththan the diameter of said section, and a knife having its shank embedded in the re: duced end of said section.
I In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature in the presence of two sub- Witnesses O. W. Y'OUNG, CH s. O. ADKINs.
