UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PHILIP O. HAYDEN, OF -KEOKUK, IOWA.
MULTIPLE-RULING DEVICE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PHILIP O. HAYDEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Keokuk, irf the county of Lee and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Multiple-Ruling Devices, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a ruling device by means of which a series of parallel lines may be simultaneously drawn u on a blackboard or other surface by means of chalk, crayon, etc, and with this and mi nor objects in view, my invention consists of parts and combinationof parts as will be hereinafter more fully pointed out.
In the drawingFigure 1 is a side elevation of a multiple ruling device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of one of the holders detached. Fig. 4 is a detail view.
1 represents. a base of suitable construction which is wedge-shape in cross section to afford a firmer grip upon the same by the hand. This base is provided with a series of openings in its upper edge, within which the series of chalk-holders are adapted to be secured.
2 represents the chalk-holders. While in this specification I shall refer to the holders as chalk-holders, it will be understood that crayon and other marking substances may be used in said holders.
The stem of the holders is bent, as at 3, at a right angle and coiled to form a clasp 4, the body of which is set to one side of the stem of the holder 2, as will be more clearly seen in Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 26, 1907.
Patented June 23, 1908.
Serial No. 394,693.
Fig. 2. Near its lower end the stem of the holder is flattened, as at 5, while the other portions of the stem of the holder on each side of the flattened portion, is cylindrical. The holders are driven in the series of openings in the base 1 and the flattened ortion 5 serves as a lock to prevent the holders from turning in the openings in the base.
Chalk, crayon, or other marking material, is secured in the series of clasps i and the device is ready for use. 1 In use a multiple holder is drawn across a blackboard or other surface, whereby by means of the series of holders a pluralityof parallel lines are simultaneously drawn. This holder is very convenient in drawing a musical staff.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A multiple blackboard liner comprising a base and a series of arms extending parallel therefrom, each bent at right angles near its outer end and coiled to form a clasp for chalk in a different plane from the arm.
2. A blackboard liner comprisin a base, and a series of arms extending paralIel therefrom, each bent at right angles near its outer end and coiled to form a clasp for chalk in a different plane from the arm, the arm, near its inner end, being flattened.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
PHILIP C. HAYDEN.
Witnesses:
