UNTTTD STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BENJAMIN FRANK. JERVIS, OF CONNELLSVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
COMBINED PENHOLDE R AND KNIFE ERASER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 679,623, dated July 30, 1901.
Application filed April 3, 1901- Serial No. 54,158. (No model.)
To aZl'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN FRANKLIN JERvIs, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Oonnellsville, in the county of Fayette and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Penholder and Knife Eraser, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to a combined penholder and eraser, and has for its object to attach an ink or knife-edge eraser direct to the penholder in such a manner that the blade or eraser will be concealed during the time the holder is in use for writing, which eraser may, however, be readily Withdrawn from the holder when desired for use and replaced therein without interfering with the penpoint.
Briefly described, my invention comprises a slotted sleeve which at its one end is provided with holding means for the pen-point nib and into the other end of which the penholder is adapted toengage. This penholder carries a knife eraser on the end which engages within the slotted sleeve, and the latter carries a pair of shields, which lie one on each side of the knife when the latter is in position within the sleeve, so as to protect the same when the holder is being used for writing.
The particular construction of my device, together with its advantages, will be hereinafter more specifically described and then particularly pointed out in the claim, and in describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and wherein like numerals of reference will be employed for designating like parts throughout the several views of the drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved combined penholder and eraser. Fig. 2 is an underneath plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail side elevation of the eraser removed from the pen-point holder. Fig. dis a longitudinal sectional view of the pen-point holder. Fig. 5 is an end view of the same with the pen-point removed. Fig. 6 is a detail perspective View thereof.
To put my invention into practice, I provide a sleeve 1, provided throughout its length on the under side with a slot 2 and intermediate of its ends on this underneath side ateach side of the slot with a downwardly-depending wing or flange 3, which form guards for the knifeblade forming the eraser, as will be more fully explained. In the manufacture of this sleeve the same is left wider at its forward end and has logs or wings at bent upwardly within the sleeve, leaving a space 5 between them and the inner wall of the sleeve at the forward end of the latter to receive the nib of the pen point 6. The holder 7 is adapted to fit within the upper end of the sleeve 1, and this holder 7 has secured to its lower end a knife eraser 8, the edge of the blade passing through the slot 2 in the sleeve and lying between the wings or guards 3 when the holder is in position in the sleeve. When it is desired to use the eraser, the holder may be readily Withdrawn from the sleeve and replaced after usage, the sleeve and pen-point being laid to one side during the use of the eraser. On account of the scratching usually necessary when using a knife eraser it is not desirable to have the pen-point with the holder during the using of the eraser, as the movement of the eraser is liable to cause the ink to be dislodged from the pen-point onto the paper. By making the eraser removable from the sleeve which carries the pen-point this disadvantage is avoided, and it will be observed that the removal may be readily accomplished without danger of soiling the fingers. The guards 3 at each side of the knife-blade where the latter protrudes from the sleeve prevent the latter from being damaged and also prevent the user of the holder from injury on the blade of the knife. These guards 3 further serve as a preventive of the penholder turning in the fingers while writing, thus giving the writer a nice easy grip on the holder, which prevents cramping of the fingers.
In the practice of the invention it will be observed that various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a combined penholder and knife eraser, the combination with a sleeve slotted along its underneath side and having depending wings, one at each side of said slot, of aholder 10 adapted to engage in the upper end of said sleeve, and a knife carried by said holder and so located as to have its blade guarded by the wings carried by the sleeve, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature I 5 in the presence of two Witnesses.
