Be it known that I, VILLIAM A. CALDWELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Manila, Philippine Islands, have invented a new and useful Penholder, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to an improved attachment for pen holders whereby the same may 'be employed for ruling purposes without danger of contaminating the rule and pen with ink.
The primary object of the invention is to design a novel guard of this character which can be readily held either in an operative or inoperative position and. which when in the latter position will not interfere with the use of the pen for writing purposes.
The invention further contemplates the provision of a guard which does not obstruct vision of the pen point when tracing or ruling with the same.
For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction and the means for effecting the result, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective of a pen holder having the improved guard member applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through the pen holder showing the guard member in aretracted position. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the guard member in a projected position.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
Specifically describing the present embodiment of the invention, the numeral 1 designates the stem of an ordinary pen holder and 2- the usual metallic clamp at one end of the pen holder for engaging the pen point 3. A longitudinal disposed groove or guide way 4 is formed in the stem 1 adjacent the clamp 2 and loosely receives the web portion 5 of the guard attachment. Extending along one of the longitudinal edges of the web 5 is a rib 6 which forms an extended bearing for the finger of the operator when the device is extended into an operative position, and is designed to fit against the exterior of the stem 1 over the mouth of the groove 4 when the guard is moved into an inoperative-position. The upper portion of the web is enlarged as Specification of Letters Patent.

indicated at 7 and is provided with a longi tudinally disposed slot 8 loosely receiving a pin 9 extending across the guide way 4 at an intermediate point in the length of the same. The lower end of the slot 8 communicates with an inwardly and rearwardly extending notch 10 which is designed to receive the pin 9 when the web 5 is completely housed within the groove 4 as when the device is in an inoperative position. The lower end of the web 5 terminates in an extension 11 which is curved inwardly and is designed to be either project-ed along one side of the pen point 3 or to be housed within the guide way 4.
When it is desired to move the guard into an operative position the rib 6 is moved upwardly and the pin 9 thereby thrown into the lower portion of the notch 10 adjacent the mouth of the slot 8. The lower end of the rib is then grasped with the fingers and pulled outwardly to move the pin without the notch 10, whereupon the device can be moved downwardly and the extension 11 projected along one side of the pen point. WVhen in this position the pin 9 is at the upper end of the slot 8 and cooperates with the same to hold the edge of the web 5 projected laterally from the stem 1 and the rib 6 spaced from the said stem. It will thus be apparent that by a combined lateral and longitudinal sliding movement the guard member can be either projected into or withdrawn from an operative position. In the use of the-guard member the inwardly curved extension 11 is designed to engage the edge of the rule and hold the pen point spaced therefrom so as to prpvent any flow of ink from the pen to the ru c.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. The combination of a pen holder having a guide way formed therein, and a guard member comprising a web movable both laterally and longitudinally within the guide way to admit of the guard member being moved into an operative or inoperative position.
2. The combination of a pen holder having a guide way formed therein, and a guard member comprising a web provided with a rib, the said web being movable within the guide way to admit of the guard member being moved into or out of operative position and the rib being designed to fit against the exterior of the pen holder.
3. The combination of a pen holder havin a guide way formed therein, and a guar member comprising a web provided with a rib, the said web being movable laterally and longitudinally within the guide way to admit of the guard member being moved into and out of operative position and the rib being designed to fit against the exterior of the pen holder.
4. The combination of a pen holder having a guide way formed therein, a pin extending across the guide way, and a guard member provided with a slot receiving the pin, the movement of the pin Within the slot permitting the guard member to be moved into or out of operative position.
5. The combination of a pen holder having a guide way formed therein, a pin extending across the guideway, and a guard member provided with a slot receiving the pin and a notch communicating with the slot, the movement of the pin within the slot and notch permitting the guard member to be moved into and out of operative position.
6. The combination of a pen holder having a guide Way formed therein, a pin extending across the guide way, and a guardmember comprising a web received within the guide way and provided with a rib, the said web being formed with a slot receiving the before mentioned pin and having a rearwardly extending notch in communication with one end thereof, the movement of the pin Within the slot and notch permitting the web to be moved laterally and longitudinally for pro- 5 jecting the guard into an operative position or withdrawing it therefrom.
