Description

C. W. LAIR.
EJECTING PENHOLDER.
APPLICATION EILED JUNE 15. 1912.
1,2%%,3%3. Patented Oct. 23,1917.
INVENTOR zw v M A y W ATTORNEY CHARLES W. LAIR, OF BETHEL, MISSOURI.
EJECTING-PENHOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 23, 1917.
Application filed June 15, 1917. Serial No. 174,968.
To all whom 2'25 may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES l/V. LAIR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bethel, in the county of Shelby and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Ejecting-Penholders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to ejecting penholders and has for its primary object to pro vide an ejecting mechanism of a simple and efficient character.
A further object of my invention is to provide a penholder which is adapted to retract the pen into the penholder so that the penholder may be carried around in the pocket, means being provided on said pen holder whereby the pen may be ejected by the manipulation of the same mechanism which serves normally to retract the same within the penholder.
lVith these and other objects in view which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claim, the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a penholder embodying my invention with the pen extending in writing position,
Fig. 2 is an enlarged longitudinal section showing the parts in the same position as designated in Fig. 1,
Fig. 3 is an enlarged transverse section of the device on the line ac: of Fig. 1.
Like characters of reference indicate like parts in the various views.
In the drawings 1 designates a tubular pen stock which is provided at its one end with a handle 2 of usual construction. A pen nib retaining member 3 is mounted for longitudinal movement within said pen stock. The pen stock is provided with a longitudinal slot t, and a sleeve 5 which is mounted upon the outer surface of the pen stock 1 for longitudinal movement, and is connected to the pen nib retaining member by means of pins 6. The pen nib retaining member comprises a circular sleeve member 7, tov which the pins 6 are secured, and a forwardly extending portion 8, which is curved to fit the nib of a pen 9, and which lies adjacent the inner surface of the sleeve 7 The inner walls of the portion 8 have a longitudinal slot 10 formed therein for purposes presently to be described.
A bracket 11 is mounted within the pen stock 1 which is disposed near the upper end thereof, and a bar 12 is pivoted on the bracket 11 at a point intermediate its ends and extends toward the lower end of the pen stock. A shoulder 13 is formed upon the extending end of said bar and is adapted to engage the lower end of the pen 9 as the pen nib retaining member 3 is moved downwardly into the pen stock, the slot 10 allowing said shoulder to engage said pen until it is ejected from the retaining member. A plunger lat is mounted upon the lower end of the bar 12 and extends through a hole 15 in the pen stock and terminates in a knob 16 on the outside of the pen stock. A
spring 17 is secured upon the outside of the,
pen stock and engages the under surface of the knob 16, and through the plunger 14 serves to normally position the bar 10 so that the shoulder 13 thereof is in a disengaged position relative to the pen 9.
By the above described mechanism it will be noted that an ejecting penholder is provided which will allow the pen to be retracted within the handle, means being provided whereby the pen may be forced from its retaining member as it is moved to retract the same within the pen stock.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim A penholder comprising a stock, a sleeve slidably mounted therein, a retainer attached to the sleeve and adapted to carry a pen, a bar pivoted in the stock and having an end portion passing through the side thereof, said bar having a shoulder which is located in the sleeve and a spring'engaging the bar and normally holding the shoulder thereof out of the path of movement of the pen carried by the retainer.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
CHARLES W. LAIR.
