Description

PATENTED JULY 28,1908,
H. E. GATLIN.
NIB EJEG1IING PBN HOLDBR. APPLICATION FILED DEC. 6. 19 07.
HORACE E. OATLIN, OF RYE, NEW YORK.
NIB-EJECTING PENHOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 28, 1908.
Application filed December 6, 1907. Serial No. 405,396.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HORACE E. OATLIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rye, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nib-Ejectihg Pen holders, of which the following is a specification. 3
This invention relates to pen holders, and has for its object to provide a simple and effective means whereby a used nib may be ejected in a simple manner.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description and it will be understood that changes in the specific structure shown and described may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings forming a portion of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a side elevational view of the present pen holder, Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view showing the position of the parts to eject a nib, Fig. 3 is a similar view showmg the parts in an operative position, Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the nib holding jaws, Fig. 5 is a plan view of the blank from which the jaws are made.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, there is shown a pen stock 10 consisting of the sections 11 and 12 respectively. The section 12- is provided with an outwardly extending metallic rod 13, and this rod is threaded at its outer end as shown at 14. The section 11 is provided with an enlarged bore 15, which opens outwardly of the outer end of this section and which terminates at a point inwardly of the inner end of this section, and at the inner end this bore is in communication with a reduced bore 16, which is also formed in the section 1.1. The rod 13 carried by the section 12 is disposed within the bore 16, and this rod also has its threaded end extended within the bore 15, as shown.
Resilient nib holding jaws 17 are arranged within the bore 1'5, and these jaws are en- I larged at their outer ends as shown at 18, and
these jaws are provided with reduced inner portions 19. The aws are provided at their inner ends with a circular head 20, and this head is provided with a threaded passage 21.
The threaded passage 21 is thus arranged to receive the threaded end 14 of the rod 13. The jaWs17 are formed of resilient metal, and the metal is bent in order that the outer portions of the jaws will be flared away from the head 20. The outer portions of the jaws 17 are semi-circular in cross section, and these jaws are thus arranged to conform to the curvature of a nib of ordinary construction.
A nib A is arranged between one of the jaws 17, and the inner Wall of the bore 15, as shown. WVhen it is desired to eject a nib, the outer section 11 is held in one hand, and the section 12 is rotated whereupon the head 20 will ride the threaded portion of the rod 13, and the jaws 17 will be moved with a portion outwardly of the open end of the bore 15. The tendency of the jaws will be to expand, thus ejecting the pen A.
In order to prevent rotation of the rod 13, the inner end thereof is flattened as shown at 13, and this flattened portion of the rod is embedded in the material from which the stock is made. The bore 15 is preferably provided with a metallic lining 15, as shown.
What is claimed is:
1. In a nib-ejecting pen holder, the combination with a sectional stock, one of said sections having a bore, the other section having a rod disposed with a portion within the bore, said rod having its end within the bore threaded, of resilient jaws disposed within the bore and having a portion engaged with the threaded portion of the rod.
2. An ejecting pen holder comprising a sectional stock, one of said sections having a longitudinally extending bore, the other section having an outwardly extending rod, the rod having a threaded outer end and disposed within the bore, and resilient jaws disposed within the bore and having a portion engaged with the threaded portion of the rod for movement of the aws outwardly of the bore at times and at times inwardly of the bore.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
HORACE E. OATLIN.
