Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 28, 1911.
Application filed August 7, 1911. Serial No. 642,623.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AMBBosn V. RAY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Sabbath Rest, in the county of Blair, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Penholders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that type of pen holders which are intended to facilitate the release of a worn or used pen, without neces sitating the soiling of the fingers or the use of an implement.
The invention comprises certain details whereby the pen is more conveniently held while in use and whereby it may be released more expeditiously than is usual in this class of devices, at the same time providing a holder which is simple and neat in construe tion and not cumbersome to the fingers, all of which will be understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Figurel is a side view; Fig. 2 is a plan view; Fig'. 3 is a longitudinal section; Fig. 4C is a transverse section on the line 41-4 of Fig. 3, and Fig. 5 is an end view.
Throughout the following description and on the several figures of the drawings similar parts are referred to by like reference characters.
The device comprises a main portion or barrel 10 of tubular formation, into one end of which the stem 11 projects in the usual manner, these parts being held together ordinarily by friction. The barrel is provided along its upper surface intermediate of its ends with a longitudinal slot 12, and on opposite sides of the slot and extending parallel thereto are guides 13, the outer edges of which are spaced slightly from the upper surface of the barrel and extend toward each other. The front ends of said guide edges are cut away at 13 for a purpose soon to appear.
At 14 is shown a keeper slidable along the aforesaid guides and having upon its surface a lug or projection 15 whereby it may be moved along the guides by the finger or thumb nail while the pen holder is being held in the same hand, and coperating normally with the front end of the barrel. Within the barrel is a follower 16 having a shank 17 extending through the slot 12 and connected'to the keeper, preferably at the lug 15, the follower being of substantially the diameter of the inside of the barrel. Said shank serves to limit the movement of the keeper along the guides 13. If desired a spring 18 may be used between the follower and the end of the stem 11 to automatically extend the keeper to its normal position after the pen has been released and maintain it in such position ready to receive another pen.
By the construction and arrangement of the guides 13 the keeper will admit and hold securely practically any size or thickness of pen, the main portions of the guides constituting the principal holding means, while the forward portions of the guides permit the necessary outward radial movement of the front end of the keeper to readily admit the pen and yet the guides will positively prevent any lateral displacement of the keeper. It is not necessary to hold the keeper in its normal or extended position while inserting the pen, whether or not the spring is employed, although without the spring the operator must have the keeper in its normal position when beginning to introduce the pen, unless he wishes to slide the keeper outwardly after the pen is put in place.
This pen holder may be made of any suitable material and is but slightly larger in diameter or more bulky than an ordinary pen holder, and moreover by its simplicity it may be cheaply produced and easily manipulated in the manner above set forth.
Having thus described a preferred embodiment of the invention, what I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. The hereindescribed releasing pen holder comprising a tubular barrel having a longitudinal slot along its upper surface, a pair of guides parallel to said slot and having their outer edges extending toward each other. a keeper slidable along said guides and thereby prevented from lateraladisplaca ment, and means connected to the keeper and coperating with said slot to limit the longitudinal movement of the keeper, substantially as set forth.
2. The hereindescribed releasing pen holder comprising a hollow cylindrical bar rel having a slot extending longitudinally along its upper surface and a pair of guides parallel thereto and having their outer edges extending toward each other, a keeper cooperating normally with the front end of the barrel and slidable rearwardly along said guides, said keeper having a lug whereby it may be moved, a follower of substantially the diameter of the interior of the barrel and connected to said keeper for simultaneous movement along the barrel, the connecting means for the follower eoperating with the slot to limit the longitudinal movel0 ment of the keeper, and a spring ooperat AMBRO SE V. RAY.
