PEN-POINT GUARD.

Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE E. WooD- BURY, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pen-Point Guards, of which the following is a specification.

, This invention has for its object to provide a lcvice for protecting the points-or nibs of a pen, and especially as an attachment to the penholder or socket bearing part to prevent the points from coming in contact with any hard object and being thereby bent or in jured whenever the pen is accidentally dropped, the device being of such character that it can be attached to the penholder or socket without interfering with the proper use or function of the pen, and at the same time it Wlll be always in condition for operation.

To this end and object my said invention consists in a pen-point guard or protector of novel construction and in its combination with a penholder or socket, as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims at the end of this specification.

The accompanying drawings herein referred to and forming part of this specification represent a guard or protector embodying my invention applied to a fountain-pen of well-known kind.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a fountainpen provided with my pen-point guard and illustrating the position of the guard when the pen is in use. Fig. 2 is a side view of the guard in position over the pen-point. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a cross-section on the line at y, Fig. 2.

The leading parts or features of my device comprise a guard or protector adapted to ex tend from the top side of or above the penpoint over and in front of the nibs, a spring so applied thereto as to normally hold such guard or protector in operative position in front of or in line with the nibs or points, and a finger-piece connected with such guard or protector formed as a part thereof and so placed or arranged with respect to that part of the holder on which the fingers of the user bear when the pen is being used that the pressure of the fingers necessary to properly grip and guide the en will by acting on the finger-piece hold t e pen-guard out of the way, but when such pressure is taken 01f the the fingers upon the finger-piece of the de vice is again applied.

In the present constructlon the guard or protector a is formed on one end of a strip or i narrow plate A of metal by bending the plate A down at right angles, more or less, to the body or main portion of the plate and forming the portion of the opposite end into a finger-piece 6. Between these two parts a and b a pivot is formed or provided by attaching the plate A loosely to the handle or socket portion of the holder, so that it is free to rock on the same as a center. Between the holder or socket and the finger-piece b the spring d is interposed in such manner or in such position that its pressure against the finger-piece serves to hold the guard in operative osition in front of or in working line wafi the points of the pen as long as there is no pressure applied to the fingerpiece, and immediately upon the removal of the finger from the finger-piece the spring will act to throw or set the opposite guard-bearing end over or in front of the point of the pen. By virtue of this arrangement of the part A and the combination therewith of the spring cl it will be seen that the device becomes automatic in its action to the extent of coming into position in front of the penpoint and of guarding or protecting the point as soon as the pen is laid down or is not held in working position.

The finger-piece b is situated in such position that as the pen is taken in the fingers and adjusted for writing the fingers of the writer mechanically press and hold down the finger-piece, and thus hold the guard out of the way without calling for the exercise of any special care or attention on the part of the writer.

The device is Well adapted to be used on a fountain-pen without interfering with the placing or removing of the cap, and as an attachment to a pen of that character, as well as to any holder carrying a gold pen-point, it will be of great advantage in prolonging the usefulness of the pen-point, for the reason that it efiectively prevents the points from being bent out of shape.

A pen provided with this attachment can be dropped or allowed to roll off the desk' without damaging the point, because the guard is always in position to protect the points when the finger-piece is released.

This device is readily applied to the pen holder by mounting it on a band a, which is fixed on the holder back of the pen-point socket. It can also be attached to the holder by fixing the pivots f for the guard directly in the socket-piece that grips or holds the pen point, thereby dispensing with the band e.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A pen-point guard comprising a fingerpiece pivotally attached to the holder behind the pen-point, a guard carried by saidiingerpiece adapted to set over or in front of the pen-point, and a spring operating to set said guard in operative position When pressure is removed from the finger-piece.

2. A pen-point guard having a finger-piece adapted to be pressed by the fingers of the Writer and operating to hold said guard out of the Way of the pen-point When the pen is being used, and a spring for returning the guard to position over the pen-point When the finger-piece is relieved of the pressure of the fingers.
