UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARGARET M. ANDERSON, or person, MICHIGAN.
PENCIL-STAMP.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARGARET M. ANDER- son, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of l Vayne and State of hlichigan, have invented a new and useful Pencil-Stamp, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to stamps, and more particularly to a stamp adapted to be attached to a pencil, penholder or the like.
The invention has among the objects thereof to provide a constriiction that is compact, that will add no appreciable weight to the pencil, penholder or the like, and which may be easily and cheaply manufactured. Further, to provide a construction that while permitting the stamp to be used without materially changing the position of the pencil in the hand, will not hide the point of the pencil or pen.
ther objectsof the invention will more fully hereinafter appear.
The invention consists in the peculiar construction, arrangement and combination of parts as hereinafter set forth. and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation showing my improvement as applied to a pencil; Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation; and Fig. 3 is a section on the line aa-m of Fig. 1.
A designates a pencil and B a stamp en1- bodying the invention. The construction herein illustrated comprises a body portion C, forming a means of attachment to the pencil, and a holder section D for the stamp proper E. The attaching section G, as
shown, is formed of a longitudinally split sleeve of spring metal, so as to permit the section C to be readily engaged with pencils or pens of various diameters, and. when engaged, to remain in whatever position of longitudinal adjustment it is moved to. The holder D is formed of a U-shaped metallic strip having the top F soldered or otherwise suitably secured to the member C, as best shown in 2. This holder extends laterally from the member 0 and at an angle thereof, so that when the pencil is in position for writing, the same will be arranged in proper relation to be pressed into engagement with the article to be printed.
Specification of Letters latent.

However, the height of the holder D and the stamp E is such that by positioning these parts slightly in rear of the point, they member C is provided adjacent the lower end and on the bottom face thereof with a downwardly extending ber C so as to form a flat bearing surface H for engaging the top face I of the U- shaped stamp-holding section D. This arrangement permits the arranging of the holder at the proper angle in relation to the member C.
The construction hereinbefore described is one that may be very easily manufactured, will not--as before stated--interfere with the operation of writing, nor will it hide the pencil point from the operator. Also it is not necessary to turn the pencil over to at fix the stamp, but it is merely necessary to change the angle of the pencil. to the surface to be stamped.
My improved construction is exceedingly desirable for libraries or the like, where it is necessary to not only stamp the card or other article, but also to make a notation thereon with a pencil. or pen. Furthermore, because of the simplicity and lightness of the device,
it in no way makes the pen or pencil cumber some.
While I have described the preferred form of my invention, I do not wish to limit my protection to the exact construction shown.
What I claim as my invention is An attachment for a pen or pencil, comarisin a tubular sleeve havin a lonqitudi- 23 i E? if nal slot extending uninterruptcdly from end to end, and a U-shaped stamp-holding sec tion extending laterally of and beneath the sleeve, said sleeve being provided with a downwardly-extending attaching section connected to the top of the stamp-holding section intermediate the ends of the latter.
. Join. A, PRESCO'I'I,
