P Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 26,1907.
Application filed December 1l 1906. Serial No. 345,894.
To ct/, 1u/tom. it Trl/ay concern:
Beit known that l, HENRY B. LEVY, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, Manhattan State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pocket- ()lips for Fountain-Pens, of which the following is a clear, full, and exact description.
This invention relates to pocket-clips for fountain-pens, pen-holders, pencils, and the like, the object being to provide a cheap and eil'ective fastening device which can be attached to the cap of a fountain-pen or the like for the purpose of detachably holding the same in a pocket.
To these and other ends, which will hereinafter appear, my invention comprises the novel features oil improvement which I will new proceed to describe and reference being had to drawings, forming part of this speciiication, whereinj Figure 1 .illustrates an elevation of a fountain-pen with my improved clip attached to the cap thereof. Fig. 2 isan enlarged vertical sectional view of a fountainpen cap having my improved clip attached thereto, the section being taken on a line a. al in Fig. 1, a portion of the barrel' being shown in elevation. Fig. 3 is anenlarged crosssectional plan view, the section being taken on a line b b in Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 is anenlai-ged detail proved clip.
Like numerals ofreference are intended to indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates the cap of a fountain-pen, to which is attached my improved clip 2. 3 indicates the usual opening or vent in said cap. i utilize the said opening 3 for the purpose of preventing longitudinal displacement of the clip f2, andl may or may not increase the size ol said opening 3 over that usually used.
As will be seen by Fig. 4, the clip 2 is composed of the curved retaining-wings 4 and 5,
which are designed to slip over the cap ofthe iountan'n-pen` l'reely and need not have any spring or grasping action to prevent the clip from heilig displaced'from the cap by any side-thrust or pressure, and my said clip is also provided with a grasping or spring iinger 6. which is designed to exert suilicient finally claim,- the accompanyingI perspective view of my im-v borough, county and the clip from belng displaced lon time making it much pressure upon that part of the pocket or clothing which is inserted at point 7, Fig. 2, between said finger 6 and cap 1. To prevent itu dinall I provide a retaining-arm 8, whic is pref f"- ably slightly resilient, said arm being provided with an inwardly-projecting nose 9, which is adapted to pass through the air vent or opening 3 of cap 1.
As will be seen by Fig. 3, said nose 9 is approximately the width of the opening 3, but not thick enough-to completely iill said opening, (see Fig. 1,)"so as to destroy its utility. he wings 4 and 5 are preferably diamondshape'd and almost surround the cap, leaving a gap 10 opposite to the bridge portion '11 of the clip 2. The diamond shape of the wings causes them to be resilient to an extent suii`1- cient to aid the finger 6 to perform its function of grasping the clothing, at the same easier to fit the pen-cap than if the said wings were rectangular, as there is less liability to twist. To clip on the cap, it is but necessary to slip the wings 4 and 5 over the cap, 8 outwardly until the nose 9 has been brought opposite to the opening 3, at which point said nose can be allowed to spring in.` By this mode of fastening the clip in position a firm and effective clip, is produced, and as same is made of an integral piece of sheet metal the entire device can be stamped out and shaped at little cost. It will ofcourse be understood that the nose 9 need not pass entirely through an opening, such as 3, but may enter a notch oprplcess in the cap or pencil to which it is ap- 1e P Having now described my invention, what I claim, and desire. to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. 'In combination with a'fountain-pencap provided with an opening, of a clip, and means carried by said' clip adapted to lengage said opening.
2. 1n combination with a provided with an opening, of a clip, wings carried by said clip and adapted to partly surround said cap, carried by said arm adapted to engage said opening.
