ATTORNEYS.
' far/Wes W We/sfi Patented Sept. 26, 1950 CLIP FOR WRITING INSTRUMENTS James W. Welsh, Providence, R. I., assignor to Welsh Manufacturing Company, a corporation of Rhode Island Application January 9, 1946, Serial No. 640,943
2 Claims.
This invention relates to a clip for a writing instrument such for instance as a pen or pencil.
One of the objects of this invention is to provide a clip which will be of simple construction. and which may be attached to the writing instrument without the use of an additional part.
Another object of this invention is to provide a means for securing the clip on the writing instrument which will be one piece with the clip.
Another object of this invention is to provide a means for securing the clip on the writing instrument by merely bending parts of the clip over parts of the writing instrument.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, as will be more fully described and articularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings:
Fig. 1 is an elevation of a fountain pen;
Fig. 2 is a central section view through the cap of the fountain pen and showing the clip positioned thereon;
Fig. 3 is a sectional View similar to Fig. 2 with the clip removed;
Fig. 4 is an elevation of the clip separated from the cap;
Fig. 5 is a fragmental elevation looking at the clip at right angles to the showing in Fig. 1;
Fig. 6 is a sectional View on substantially line 66 of Fig. 2; and
Fig. '1 is a view similar to Fig. 6 but modified with relation to Fig. 6 in that the prongs are bent in the opposite direction.
In proceeding with this invention I cut out of sheet stock a blank which may be bent to form the clip desired with a prong at one end of the clip and additional prongs spaced therefrom to be utilizedin engaging the cap for holding the clip assembled thereon. The clip is thenassembled on the cap and by bending is secured in position.
With reference to the drawings, the writing instrument is here shown as a fountain pen comprising a barrel l and a tubular cap H which is removably secured on the barrel l0 and rovided with a clip designated generally ii. The clip may be attached to any tubular portion. having an end wall, the'cap I! being here shown as an example. i
The clip [2 is cut from sheet stock and provides a body portion I4 which is curved as at at its upper end and provided with an engaging knob l6 at its lower end. The upper end I5 is provided with a pointed prong or finger l! which is bent from the sheet stock of the body it so as to extend generally parallel to the lengthwise direction of the clip l2. At a point intermediate the ends of the clip and preferably about one third of the length thereof from the upper end, so as to leave spring of the body between such location and the knob I6, I provide arms M which are folded from the sheet stock of the body and are generally triangular in shape. These arms are of a length sufficient to extend through the thickness of the stock of the cap or portion to which they are secured.
The cap II is provided with a slot l9 at the top thereof and also provided with slots 20 spaced therefrom, which slots 20 extend completely through the wall 2! of the cap I I.
The Clip H2 is positioned on the cap by inserting the finger or prong I! into the end of the cap such as in the slot I9 or it may be pressed into the cap making its own opening and then the arms l8 are pressed-through the slots 20 or forced through the stock of the wall 2| to make their own openings. The ends of the prongs 22 of the arms are folded outwardly along the inner surface of the bore 23 of the cap as shown in Fig. 6 or these prongs may be folded inwardly as shown at 22 in Fig. 7, so as to lock the cli to the cap. This assembly permits of sufiicient resiliency between these arms l8 and the contact knob I6 for springing the clip over the edge of the pocket to secure the writing instrument in the pocket.
I claim:
1. In combination, the tubular portion of a writing instrument having a closed end with a recess ext-ending axially inwardly from the outer tip of said end and openings through the wall of the tubular portion at a point spaced from said end, a clip having a body extending generally lengthwise along the outer surface of the tubular portion and over said closed end with a finger extending axiall intosaid recess, and a pair of arms on said body extending through said openings with their edges engaging the edges of said openings and limiting movement of the body lengthwise of said tubular portion whereby axial withdrawal of the finger from said recess is prevented and means to hold said arms in said openings.
2. The combination of claim 1 wherein the ends of the arms are clenched over the inner surface of the wall of the tubular portion.
