This invention relates to a combined pencil protector and pen holder and one object of the invention is to provide a device which may be detachably and adjustably applied to a pencil 5 and serve not only as a shield for the pencil but also as a carrier for a pen which may be detachably applied to the carrier and when in place project forwardly beyond the front end of the carrier.

Another object of the invention is to so form the protector that when it is applied to a pencil the point of the pencil may project through an opening at the front end of the protector for use or the protector so disposed upon the pencil that the point will be housed within the protector and prevented from being broken when carried in a pocket.

Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be easily applied .to a pencil and frictionally held in place thereon, a clip being carried by the protector for gripping a pocket and holding the pencil and preventing it from falling out and being lost.

Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is simple in construction, very efficient in operation and capable of being manufactured at a very reasonable cost.

Still another object of the invention resides in l providing aldevice which is simple and durable in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and one which will be very efficient in operation and application to use.

With these and numerous other objects in view, my invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claims. to The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing wherein:

In describing the invention, I shall refer to the drawing in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which this improved protector and pen holder is to be applied to a pencil 15 I which is of the usual formation and has a lead 2 which projects from the wooden sheath of the pencil when sharpened with a knife or mechanical sharpener,

The body 3 of the device is formed of resilient 2O sheet metal and is of tubular formation but has its forward portion 4 tapered to provide a frustroconical tip terminating in a flattened front end 5 in which is formed an opening 6 of such diameter that the lead may project forwardly through the opening when the protector is shifted rearwardly along the pencil from the position shown in Figure 3 in which it entirely encloses and shields the lead to the position of Figure 4 in which the lead projects forwardly through the opening into position for use. A slit 1 leads from the rear end of the body in order that the body may expand and contract to accommodate itself to the thickness of the pencil and have frictional gripping engagement therewith and at its front end the slit terminates in an enlarged substantially circular portion 8 which allows expansion and contraction of the body without danger of splitting the body. About its rear end the tubular body is flared outwardly as shown at 9 to permit a pencil to be easily thrust into the protector and at the junction of the tubular portion of the body with the tapered forward portion thereof an outstanding bead It has been formed to reinforce it and prevent the protector from being easily bent out 5 of shape. A spring clip H terminating in an enlarged spherical end or knob l2 at its free end is fixed at one end to the body across the flared end thereof and this clip projects from the rear end of the protector longitudinally thereof to serve as means for gripping a portion of a pocket engaged between the clip and pencil and prevent accidental loss of the pencil.

This device is to serve as a pen holder as well as a protector for a pencil and, therefore, a portion l3 of the tubular body has been oflset outwardly to define a pen receiving pocket M having inner fianges l along its sides. It will be obvious that the offset portion I 3 may be formed integral with the tubular body or a portion of the body out out and the portion l3 formed of a separate piece of metal brazed or otherwise firmly secured to the body in straddling relation to the cutout so that portions of the body form the flanges IS. The forward end of this offset portion or outer wall of the pen receiving pocket projects forwardly from the bead ID to provide a tongue is which overlaps the tapered portion 4 in spaced relation thereto and permits the shank ll of the pen 8 to be easily thrust into the pocket I l. Shoulders l9 may be provided upon the pen to limit movement of its shank rearwardly through the pocket and hold the pen in the position shown in Figure 5 with its nib projecting forwardly beyond the front end of the protector in position for use when writing. When the pen is not in use, it may be reversed and thrust into the pocket so that the nib will be shielded or if the shoulders l9 are omitted, the pen may be thrust rearwardly through the pocket to such a position that its nib will terminate rearwardly of the front end of the protector and not interfere with use of the pencil. It will thus be seen that the device will serve very efficiently as a protector for a pencil and also as a pen holder.

From the foregoing description of the construction of my improved device, the operation thereof and the method of applying the same to use will be readily understood. It will be seen that I have provided a simple, inexpensive and efilcient means for carrying out the objects of the invention and while I have particularly described the elements best adapted to perform the functions set forth, it is obvious that various changes in form, proportion and in the minor details of construction may be resorted to, without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the principles of the invention.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:

1. A device of the character described comprising a hollow body having a conical front portion and a tubular rear portion adapted to fit about a pencil and having an opening at its front end through which the lead of a sharpened pencil may project when the body is applied to a pencil,

the tubular rear portion of said body having means formed integral therewith for detachably holding a pen in position to extend longitudinally of the body with the nib of the pen projecting forwardly from the tubular rear portion of the body along the conical front portion of the body in lateral spaced relation thereto and beyond the front end of the body.

2. A device of the character described comprising a hollow body having a tubular rear portion open at its rear end and a tapered front portion formed with a lead passage at its front end, the tubular rear portion having a portion of its walls outwardly offset transversely thereof to form a pen receiving pocket extending longitudinally of the body and having its front end open at the junction of the tubular rear portion of the body with the rear end of the tapered front portion of the body.

3. A device of the character described comprising a body including a tubular portion having a longitudinally extending laterally offset portion defining a pen receiving seat open at its front end, and abutments extending inwardly of the seat from sides thereof for gripping side edge portions of a pen and holding the pen in the pocket.

4. A device of the character described comprising a hollow body having a tubular rear portion and a forwardly tapered front portion, the tubular rear portion having a longitudinally extending offset portion defining a pen receiving pocket open at its front end, and fianges along sides of said pocket for gripping side edge portions of a pen and frictionally holding the pen in the pocket.

5. A device of the character described comprising a hollow body having a tubular rear portion and a forwardly tapered front portion, the tubular rear portion having a longitudinally extending offset portion defining a pen receiving pocket open at its front end, the front end of the offset portion being projected forwardly beyond the front end of the tubular rear portion for guiding a pen into the pocket, and internal flanges along sides of the pocket for frictionally gripping side edge portions of a pen and holding a pen in the pocket in position for projecting forwardly from the pocket over the tapered front portion of the body with the nib of the pen protruding beyond the front end of the body.
