Description

H. GONZALEZ.
PENCIL TIP AND PENHOLDER.
APPLICATION FILED JULY 3. I9I9.
Patented July 5, 1921.
wuawboz Mommy UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HOMOIBONO GONZALEZ, OF PARANAQUE, PHILIPPINE ISLANDS.
PENCIL-TIP AND PENHOLDER.
' Application filed July 8,
To all to 710m it may concern:
Be it known that I, HoMonoNo GONZALEZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Paranaque, in the Province of Rizal and Philippine Islands, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pencil-Tips and Penholders, oil which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a penholder attachment for lead pencils, which includes a tip or protector forthe point of the pencil, and an object of the invention is to provide an attachment for lead pencils, whereby they may be easily and quickly converted into a penholder, when desired.
Another object of this invention is to provide a cylindrical pencil tip, having pen re taining means carried thereby for retaining an ordinary pen point and also to provide a sleeve slidably carried by the cylindrical pencil tip and adapted to be projected to house or inclose the pen point, when the latter is not in use and to embody means, for retaining the said sleeve in adjusted position.
Otherobjects of the invention will appear in the following detailed description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, and in which drawing:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved pencil tip and penholder showing it in position l or'use as a penholder.
- Fig: 2 is a top plan of the improved pencil tip and penholder showing it adjusted for use as a pencil.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary plan of the pencil tip.
Fig. 4: is a detail view of the pen retaining means which is associated with the cylind rical pencil tip.
Fig. 5 is a section on the line of Fig.
Fig. 6 is a plan of the sliding sleeve.
Fig. 7 is a plan of the penholder removed from connection with a pencil, and
Fig. 8 is a cross section on the line 88 of Fig. 7.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, A indicates an ordinary lead pencil, in connection with which the improved pencil tip and penholder is used.
The pencil tip and penholder comprises a cylindrical body 1, having one end portion 2 thereof enlarged in diameter, and split longitudinally as shown at 3, to permit it to spread slightly for mounting over the end of the lead pencil A. The major portion of the Specification of Letters Patent.
1919. Serial No. 309,320.
cylindrical body 1, which is adapted to extend beyond or outwardly from either end of the pencil A, is reduced in diameter with respect to the portion 2, thereby forming a shoulder at which limits the mounting of the body upon the pencil. A pen retaining member 5 is mounted in the outer end of the reduced portion of the body 1 and this member is constructed oi suitable spring or resilient material, being substantially cylindrical in shape and formed from a single piece of metal bent to provide a longitudinally extending slot or opening 6 in the pen retainer in which engages an instruck portion 7 formed near the outer end of the constricted portion of the body 1, for preventing rotary movement of the resilient pen retainer 5 within the body 1. This pen retainer 5 is adapted to expand, for engaging a pen point as indicated at B and frictionally engages it and forces it against the inner surface of the cylindrical body 1 to retain the pen in place. The instruck portion 7 will also afltord means for limiting the insertion of the pen point B into the body 1.
A sleeve 8 is slidably mounted upon the re duced portion of the body 1, and it is adapted to be extended over the pen point B. to protect the latter when not in use, as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing, while it is moved over the reduced portion of the body 1 to permit the pen point B to be exposed for use.
The sleeve 8 is provided with a longitudinally extending slot 9 therein, and with a pair of arcuate out-struck portions 10 and 11 at its inner and outer ends respectively. These out-struck portions communicate with the longitudinal slot 9,, and are adapted to receive therein a knob or out-struck portion 12 which is formed on the body 1, near the outer end thereof. When the outstruck portion 12 is moved into the recess formed by the arcuate outstruck portion 11, by rotating the sleeve 8 upon the body 1, as shown in Fig. 8 of the drawing, longitudinal movement of the sleeve will be prevented. and the latter will be retained upon the reduced portion of the body 1 to permit the pen B to be used, however when it is desired to utiliz the pencil,'the sleeve 8 is rotated to position the knob 12 in the slot 9, and the sleeve 8 is moved longitudinally over the reduced portion of the body 1 until the knob is in alinement with the end of the outstruck arcuate portion 10 which opens into the slot 9, after Patented July 5, 1921.
lated during use of the pencil or when being carried about in ones pocket. When the device is used as a pen, it may, of. course, be
inserted over either the pointed or blunt end of the lead pencil A, and when it is desired to use the point of the lead pencil, the tip or body 1 should be mounted upon the blunt end of. the lead pencil leaving the point thereof free and when carrying the pencil about in ones pocket, the body 1 could be mounted over the point of the pencil and the sleeve 8 shifted outwardly to house the pen point B, thereby preventing either the breaking of the point of the pencil A or the mutilation of the pen point B while it is carried.
Changes in details may be made without departing from the spirit of thisinvention, but,
I claim:
1. In a pencil tip and pen holder, the
combination of a tubular body having one end enlarged for mounting upon one end of a pencil, pen retaining means carried by said body a sleeve slidably mounted upon said body and limitedin its movement over the body by the enlarged portion of the body,
said sleeve provided with a longitudinally extending slot and a pair ofop'positely extending arcuate outstruck portions at the ends of the slot, an outstruck portion formed upon said body near the end remote from the enlarged end adapted to ride in said longitudinal slot upon sliding movement of.
the sleeve over the body and adapted to be moved into the recess formed by the outstruck portions to retain the sleeve in adjusted position with respect to the body to cover or uncover the pen point. 7
2.. In a pencil tip and penholder, the combination, of a tubular body adapted for mounting upon one end of a pencil, pen retaining means carried by the body, means for preventing'rotationof the pen retaining means with respect to the body and to limit the insertion of a pen into the body, a sleeve slidably carriedby the body and adapted, to be shifted to house a pen engaged by said pen. retainingmeans, and means for retaining said sleeve in adjusted positions.
3. In a pencil tip and penholder, the combination, of a tubular body adapted for mounting upon one end of a pencil, cylindrical pen retaining means adapted for insertion into one end of said body, an instruck portion formed upon said body and adaptedto receive said pen retaining means to prevent rotation thereof withrespect to the body and to limit the insertion of a pen into the body, and a sleeve slidably supported by the body and adapted to be shifted to house the pen engaged by said: pen retaining means.
4. In a pencil tip and pen holder, the com,- bination of a tubularbody having: one end enlarged for mounting upon an end of a pencil, pen retaining meanscarried by Said body, a: sleeve slidably mounted upon said body and positioned upon thesmall; portion of said'bodyinsuchmanner that the exterior of said slidable sleeve is lodged in substantially the same plane as the exterior of said enlarged portion of: the body, said sleeve provided with a longitudinally extending slot and a; pair. of oppositely extending arcnate outstruck portions at spaced ends ofthe slot, an outstruck knob formed upon said body near theend remote from the enlarged end and adapted to ride in said longitudinal slot upon sliding movement of the sleeve and to be moved into the recess formed by either of the outstruck portions to retain the sleeve in adjusted position for housing or unhousing the pen. point.
