3 Claims. (Cl. 120'-9) This invention relates generally to pencil holders and more speciiically to pencil holders of the type adapted to receive a short section of writing pencil either in a position where it is yenclosed within and is protected by the pencil holder, or in a position Where it is extended from the pencil holder for writing operations, the predominant object of the invention being -to provide an improved pencil holder of this general type which because of its improved and unique construction and arrangement is capable of receiving the section of pencil in its protected position within the pencil holder or supported in one or the other of two diierent positions where it is projected from the holder for writing operations.
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the improved pencil holder as it appears when the associated section of pencil is enclosed within same.
Fig. 2 is an end elevation oi the improved pencil holder illustrated in Fig. l.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the improved pencil holder as it is shown in Fig. 1 and showing a section of pencil associated therewith.
Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section of the improved pencil holder shown in Figs. 1 and 3 but showing the associated section of pencil arranged in one of its writing positions.
Fig. 5 is a view partly in elevation and partly7 in longitudinal section and showing the section of pencil in the other of its writing positions.
Fig. 6 is an enlarged cross-section on line 0 6 of Fig. 3A.
In the drawing, wherein is shown for the purpose of illustration, merely, one embodiment of the invention, A designates the improved pencil holder generally. The pencil holder A includes a tubular body portion I which is open from end to end, said tubular body portion having a tapered portion I at one of its ends. At the tapered end portion of the tubular body portion I an eraser 2 is supported by said tubular body portion, a portion of said eraser being frictionally gripped by and within the tapered end portion of said tubular body portion and an outer portion thereof being extended from the tapered end portion of the tubular body portion I for use.
The improved pencil holder A includes also a tubular member 3 which is of such diameter that it ts closely within the tubular body portion at the end thereof opposite to the tapered end I thereof. The tubular member 3 is provided with an annular, outstanding bead 4 at its approximate longitudinal center and the portions 3a and 3b of said member 3 at opposite sides of the bead 4 are of corresponding diameters so that the portion 3a may be introduced into the end portion of the tubular body portion I `to .be frictionally gripped thereby, as shown in Figs, y 3 and 5, 0r the portion 3b of said member 3 may be introduced into the end portion of the tubular body portion I to be frictionally gripping thereby as shown in Fig. 4. The tubular member 3 is fully open at the outer end of the portion 3a thereof, while the outer end por-tion of the por# tion 3b of said member is slightly rounded and an opening 5 is provided at said end of said member which is of slightly less diameter than the inner diameter of said tubular member.
A short section of writing pencil P is supported by the tubular member 3, either in the position shown in Figs. 3 and 4 Where an end portion of the pencil is forced into the. portion 3a of said tubular member, or as shown in Fig. 5 where a part vof the pencil is extended entirely through said tubular member. The portion 3a of the tubular member 3 frictionally grips the part of the pencil disposed therein and in addition to this frictional gripping action the wall of said portion 3a is provided with a depressed portion 6 which bites into the Wood of the pencil, as shown in Fig. 6, in order to increase the gripping action between the tubular member 3 and the section of pencil P.
In the use of the improved pencil holder disclosed herein, the pencil holder may be carried in the pocket in the condition in which it is shown in Figs. 1 and 2, where the section of pencil P is enclosed within the holder to protect same. Also, when it is desired to use the pencil for writing operations, the tubular member 3, with the pencil section associated therewith, may be withdrawn from the body portion I, the associated tubular member and pencil section may be reversed end for end, and the portion 3by of the tubular member 3 may be inserted into the open end of the tubular body portion I as shown in Fig. 4 to provide a writing structure of substantial length for use, the annular bead 4 serving as a stop to limit inward movement of the tubular member 3 with respect to the tubular body portion I. Additionally, if it is desired to provide a shorter writing structure for frequent use, the section of pencil P is reversed in the tubular member 3, as shown in Fig. 5, where the tapered end portion P of the section of pencil is extended through the opening 5 at the outer end of the portion 3b of the tubular member 3. When the combined pencil holder and pencil are in the assembled condition shown in Fig. 5 the length of the writing structure is considerably reduced for convenient carrying about in a pocket or other receptacle, and the structure is ready for use at all times without preliminary adjustment.
I claim:
1. A holder for a pencil comprising a tubular body portion, and a tubular member adapted to have one or the opposite end portion thereof inserted into an `end portion of .said vbody portion for frictional engagement therewith and support thereby, said tubular member being open at one of its ends and being provided with an end Wall portion at its opposite end which partially closes said end of said tubular member and in which an opening is formed which is of less diameter than the diameter of said tubular member, said tubular member being adapted to frictionally receive and support a pencil either in a position Where said pencil extends from the open end of said tubular member or where a portion of said pencil extends through said opening in the partially closed end of said tubular mem-ber.

A holder for a pencil comprising a tubular body portion, and a tubular member adapted -to have one or the `opposite end portion thereof inserted into an end portion of said -body portion for frictional :engagement therewith/and support thereby, said tubular member ybeing fu-lly -open at one of its ends and 'being provided with an end Wall portion at its opposite end Whichpartially closes said end of said tubular member and in which an opening is formed which is of less diameter than the diameter of said tubular member, said tubular member being adapted to frictionally receive and support a pencil either in a position Where said pencil extends from the open end of said tubular member or where a portion of said pencil extends through said opening inthe partially closed end of said tubular member.
3. A holder for a pencil comprising a tubular .body portion, a tubular member adapted to have one or the opposite end portion thereof inserted into an end portion of said body portion for .jrictional engagement therewith and support thereby, and an eraser supported by and closing t'he end G'said body portion opposite to the end thereof which receives said tubular member, said ends and being provided with an end wall portion at its opposite end which partially closes said `end of said tubular member and in which an opening is formed .which is VAof less diameter than thediameter of said tubular member, fsaid tubular member being ladapted to irictionally -receive and support a pencil either in Aa position where said pencil extends from the :open end of said tubular member or Where a portion of said pencil extends through said opening in the partially closed end of said tubular member.
