DAVID KLEIN, OF NEW YO, N. Y., ASSIGNOR '10 MARX FINSTONE, OF BROOKLYN,
' NEW YORK.
CLIP FOR FOUNTAIN PENS.
a lication filed February 10, 1923. Serial No. 618,197.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID KLEIN, a citizen of the United States of America, residin at New York, city, county, and State of ew a York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clips for Fountain Pens, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to clips and in particular to the type used on pen or pencils'to it maintain the same in position in the pocket of the wearer to prevent 10$.
A particular object of the invention is to provide a clip which can be readily attached to the body of the writing implement withit out the use of rivets or solder and which can be manufactured efliciently at small cost, and in quantities.
Referring to the drawing wherein one embodiment of my invention is illustrated;
Fig. 1 is a front elevation of a part of a writing implement showing my improved clip attached to the cap portion thereof, the implement being either a pen or pencil;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged partial section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1 showing the method of attaching my improved clip to the cap member of the writing implement; and
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of my improved clip, the back thereof being shown to more readily illustrate the connection of the fastening member to the body of the clip.
Referring to the drawing in detail, 5 indicates the cap of a writing implement to which is attached my improved clip member. The clip is made in the usualmanner of suitable metal, the tapered portion 8 be ing capable of springing slightly to allow the ball end 9 to pass over the pocket edge to to which the writing implement is. attached.
\ The cli ositely disposed edge tongues 10 which are ent inwardly against the clip to hold a piece of metal which constitutes the fastener 11 between the tongues and the clip as illustrated in Fig, 3.
This fastener 11 will remain in whatever metal is provided with two op-- position itis bent and the upper part thereof is bent outwardly from the clip as at 12, but is relatively shorter than the lower portion 13 which also projects outwardly from the clip.
In attaching the clip 7 to the cap 5 of a writing implement, the cap is provided with two horizontal slots 14 and 15, the both be ing just sufliciently large to admit the projecting ends 12 and 13 of the fastener 11. It will be noted that the upper projection 12 is just long enough to extend into the upper slot 14 to the inner end thereof, and that the lower projection 13 not only extends through lower slot 15 but is bent upwardly against the interior Wall of the cap as at 16, (see Fig. 2), to a point adjacent the upper slot 14. This simple bending operation attaches the clip securely to the cap of the implement and the upper projecting portion 12 will prevent any sidewise movement of the clip relatively to the pen cap 5.
The lower projecting part 13 of the fastenor 11 must necessarily be the longer because when the hall end 9 of the clip is passing over the edge of a pocket it exerts an outward pull on said lower part 13 and the inturned lips 10 of the clip prevent any lcverage of said clip which would help to draw the part 13 of the fastener out of its final clamping position as illustrated in Fig. 2.
ed to the location of the clip and have shown it in connection with the cap of a writing im lemeiit merely for illustration.
avingdescribed my invention. what I claim is The combination with the cap member of a writing implement having openings therein; of a clip, a fasteningelement associated with said clip, pro'ections on said clip for engaging and hol ing said fastening element in contact with the clip, and means on said fastening element adapted to pass it is to be understood that I am not limitthrough the openings in said cap member to secure said clip to said cap member.
DAVID KLEIN.
