Description
July 31, 19281 J. SHURE FOUNTAIN PEN AND PENCIL CLIP Filed Dec. 21, 1926 Patented July 31', 1928.
UNITED STATES JULIUS SHURE, OF CHINGFORD, ENGLAND.
FOUNTAIN-PEN AND PENCIL CLIP.
Application filed December 21, 1926, Serial No. 156,179, and in Great Britain December 30, 1925.
This invention has relation to the clips to be attached to the caps of fountain pens, or to the casings of pencils for securlng the pen or pencil in the pocket, and the lnvention has for its object the provision of a simple and eflicient clip which is easily and quickly attached to the pen cap or pencil case.
Referring now to the accompanying drawm s ig. 1 shows a side elevation of one form of clip in position on a pen cap, the latter being partly broken away;
Fig. 2 shows a section on the line A, B of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 a section on the line C, D of Fig. 1' and Fig. i shows a modified form of clip.
The invention will be described in connection with a pen cap but it will be understood from the following description that it is equally well applied to a pencil. In the following description and clalms the terms fountain pen and pen cap are to be understood to include a pencil and pencil case.
Referringto Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the clip 1 is formed for a portion of its length and on two opposite edges with extensions or wings. These extensionsor w ngs are bent under the clip on lines '3, 3 which form ccntinuations of the edges of the upper part of the clip and each extension or wing 1s then bent reversely, such reverse bend 5 extending outwardly and away from the clip. The outer edges 60f the extensions are then bent parallel wit-h the clip so as to form hooks. The pen cap 7 is formed with a slot 8 that extends longitudinally thereof and the clip is attached by passing the portions 5, 6 of the extensions or wings into the slot with the clip at right angles to the position shown in Fi 1. By then turning the clip through a right angle to the position shown in Fig. 1 the hooks engage under the edges of the slot 8 and grip the wall thereof. The upper end of the clip is formed with a projection 9, preferably of the same width as the slot 8, at right angles to the body of the clip which projection, when the clip is brought to the position shown in Fig. 1,
also enters the slot 1 and prevents the clip from again turning. The distance between the projection 9 and the bottom edge of the hooks is substantially equal to the length Y of the slot.
In the modification shown in Fig. 4 the upper end of the clip is formed with a projection 10 which is bent down towards the inner face of the clip and so constitutes a projection acting in a manner similar to the projection 9 in Fig. 1. v
It will be understood that-the projection at the top end of the clip may also be of hooklike form so that its inner end engages under the upper edge of the slot 8. Further, instead of a single slot 8, a slot or hole may I be provided for the hooks 5, 6 and a separate slot or hole for the WVhat I claim is 1- 1. In a fountain pen, the combination with a pen cap having a slot through its wall, of a clip formed with portions extend-' ed inwardly toward each other from opposite edges of the clip and then bent outwardly away from each other to form hooks, said hooks adapted to be inserted through the slot in the pen with the clip at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the cap, and said hooks engaged under the edges of the slot with the clip turned to normal position on the cap.
2. In a fountain pen, the combination with a pen cap having a slot through a wall thereof, of a clip having oppositely facing hooks 85 formed extending inwardly toward each projection 9.
. other from opposite side edges and laterally of the clip, said hooks extended into and engaged under opposite side edges of the cap slot. 9O
3. In a fountain pen, the combination with a, pen cap having a slot through a Wall thereof, of a clip formed with outwardly facing hooks extending laterally from opposite side edges of the clip adjacent one end thereof, said hooks extended through said slot and extended under opposite edges thereof adjacent an end of the slot, and a projection on the clip adjacent the end thereof opposite said hooks, said projection extended into said slot adjacent the opposite end thereof from said hooks. 1
4. As a new article of manufacture, a clip tions facing outwardly and bent inwardly for mounting on and attachment to a pen toward each other to enter under opposite cap formed with a slot throughawall thereedges of a pen cap slot, and a projection 10 of, said clip embodying a curved base for formed at the opposite end of the base for 5 fitting against a pen cap, hook portions extending into the cap slot.
formed from opposite side edges of said base Dated this 3rd day of l)eccn1bor, 1926. adjacent one end thereof, said hook por- JULIUS SHURE.
