Description
1930- E. KRATOCHVIL 4 1,783,436
FOUNTAIN PEN Filed May 23, 1929 Z I A 5 3 INVENTOR.
, I 'v" EmanucZJFwac'ZI/iZ ATTORNEY} Patented Dec. 2, 1936 EMANUEL KBATOCHVIL, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS FOUNTAIN PEN Application filed May 23,
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in fountain pens.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a double fountain pen with a novel form of closure cap including separate cap sections swivelly carried by a connecting arm whereby threaded engagement of one cap section with a fountain pen tip will retain the other cap section in position.
With the above and other objects in View that will become apparent as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawing and claimed.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a side elevational view of the double fountain pen in folded position with the closure cap thereon;
Figure 2 is an end elevational View of the cap end of the folded pen structure showing the two barrel sections to be of D-shaped formation with the fiat side abutting when the pen barrels are folded;
Figure 3 is an end elevational view of the fountain pen structure folded at the hinged end thereof;
Figure 4 is a fragmentary side elevational view with the closure caps for the two fountain pen ends shown in section, illustrating the threaded engagement between one cap section and a fountain pen end and frictional engagement between the other cap section and the other fountainpen end;
Figure 5 is an edge elevational view with one of the pen barrel sections illustrated by dotted lines in its extended position;
Figure 6 is a side elevational view of the double fountain pen in open extended position; and
Figure 7 is a side elevational view, partly in section showing the independent reser- VO1IS for the two fountain pen barrels and the latch connection between the hinged ends of the barrel sections.
The fountain pen structure comprises a pair of barrels 1 of D-shape in cross-section as shown in Figures 2 and 3, each barrel 1 having a closed end 2 and a pen point 3 at 1929. Serial No. 365,338.
its other end in communicationwith the ink bulb 4 confined in the barrel, the ink bulbs or reservoirs a being filled by the usual presser bars and levers 5 shown in Figure 1.
The closed ends 2 of the barrels 1 are hingedly connected together as at 6 at tliecros's or flatside of, the barrels with the end walls 2 flatly engaging each other asshown in Figure 7 when the barrels 1 are extended or moved to open position upon their hinged connection 6. A latch is provided for holding the barrels 1 in the extended position shown in Figures 6 and 7 and includes a latch finger 7 to fit into a recess 8 opening through the end walls 2 of one barrel, the latch finger 7 having a hooked free end 9 to be extended into an opening 10 formed in the end wall 2 of the other barrel and to engage a shoulder on the wall thereof as shown in Figure 7 the latch finger 7 being operated by a push button 11 extending through the side Wall of the barrel carrying the latch.
When the barrels 1 are in the folded position shown in Figure 1, a closure cap is mounted upon the ends thereof to enclose the pen point 3, the outer end of one barrel having an annular shoulder 12 while the annular shoulder upon the other barrel is threaded as at 12a. The closure cap comprises a pair of separate cap sections 13 and 14 swivelly mounted as at 15 upon the ends of a U-shaped connecting or carrying rod 16, the cap section 13 being internally threaded over a portion of its length for engagement with the threads 12a upon the barrel collar.
p The closure. capv comprising the cap sec tions 13 and 14 when mounted upon the ends of the barrels 1 retain the barrels in the folded position shown in Figures 1 and l, the threaded engagement between one barrel section and barrel retaining the other cap section in position. frictionally engaged with the collar 12. The reservoirs lare adapted to be filled with differently colored ink so that the foun tain pen may render double use. When the cap is removed, the barrels 1 are moved upon their hinge connection 6 and the latch finger 7 carried by one barrel section moves into the recess 10 formed in the end wall 2 of the other barrel sectionto be engaged with a wall F thereof for locking the tWo barrels in extended position as shown in Figures 6 and 7. To fold the fountain pen, the push button 11 is operated to disengage the latch finger 9 from the barrel engaged thereby and at which time the barrel sections may be folded.
From the above detailed description, it is believed that the construction and operation thereof Will at once be understood, and While there is herein shown and described the preferred embodiment of the present invention, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made therein Without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
I claim A closure cap for the barrel ends of double barreled fountain pens including cap sections, a U-shaped rod having the cap sections swivelled thereon, one cap section being frictionally engaged With one barrel and the other cap section having threaded engagement with the other barrel.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
EMANUEL KRATOCHVIL.
