A further-object :of the invention is the .pro- .vis'ion of a compass leg in association with :a mechanical pencil, adapted to 'be extended'there- 'from,-whereby"the device may :beused as a compass, the leg being extensible, as desired.
Still :another object of the invention is :the provision of :such a device provided with means, whereby the-same may beiused as dividers-when desired.
Still other objects reside "in the combinations of elementsarrangements of parts, and features of construction, all as will be more'fully pointed out hereinafter and disclosed in the accompanying drawing, wherein thereis shown a preferred embodiment of this inventive concept.

Referring now to the drawing, the device of 4 Claims. (Cl. 133-27) "the instant ."invention includes a body portion @1 0 and a separate tip portion 1 I. The body is has at its upper extremity an extending portion 2-5 of reduced diameter, open at its extremity, in which open extremity is adapted to :be seated an eraser-holding cup 26, provided with an eraser 21., and including a portion '28 of reduced diameter adapted to fit within the open end :of the portion '25. Adjacent its outer extremity, the portion 25 has pivotally secured thereto, by means of 'a pivot 29, the upper extremity ofa compass leg 39, a groove or channel :31 being provided in the body portion for the accommodation of leg so in "such manner that when the parts are in nested or folded relation,
as shown in Figure the portion 38 is substantially flush with the outer wall of portion '25. Adjacent the juncture of portion 25 with body ill, the-leg 3% is 'providedwithanoffset extending portion 39', afingerna'il notch 32 being provided, and extends as 'a section, generally indicated at 33, into a. channel 34 in the side of the body it in such manner that this portion also lies ilush with the pencil when not in use. A cap portion 35 having a clip-36 thereon is adapted to be positioned on extending portion 25 when the compass leg is closed, for the purpose of holding the leg closed, and in flush relation to the body of the pencil.
A clamping means :or two oppositelydispos'ed clamping fingers 49 of a U-shaped member, Figure 7, are positioned on opposite sides of the pivoted extremity of compass leg 30 and extend upwardly into the interior of portion 28 of member 26, the fingers 40 being connected to the pivot 29. As best shown in Figure 5, the interior of portion 28 is provided with two oppositely-disposed cam surfaces 4|, the arrangement being such that when the eraser cup 26 is rotated in a clockwise direction, the cam surfaces 4| will act to clamp the fingers 40 on opposite sides of leg 30 substantially to preclude movement thereof. Conversely, counter-clockwise rotation of the device will release the engagement of the clamping fingers 40 and permit the compass leg 30 and its associated parts to be moved, as desired.
Means are provided for extending the compass leg to a length substantially equal to that of the pencil body I!) and its associated tip II, and take the form, as best shown in Figure 4, of a separable section 44 comprising a part of the extension 33, provided with side guide rods 45 engageable in suitable channels 46 formed in the portion 41 of extension 33, which is integral with the leg portion 30. The end of portion 41 is,
as best shown in Figures 4 and 6, provided with a rectangular aperture 48 adapted to be engaged by teeth 49 on the upper portion of a locking bar the opposite end of which is secured to a spring member 5|, which is, in turn, secured to portion 44. The arrangement is such that when the parts are extended to the positions shown in Figure 4, teeth 49 engage with the upper portion of the aperture 48 in such 'manner as to hold the parts in extended relation to preclude slippage thereof. Downward pressure on the member 50 will release the engagement and permm the device to be retracted, the members 45 sliding in their associated guide channels 46.
The portion 44 is provided with a relatively sharp point 52.
From the foregoing, it will now be seen that there is herein provided a device which may be readily utilized as a mechanical pencil, as a compass, or as dividers, as desired, the compass leg being provided with means whereby the same may be extended or retracted to the desired length, and locking means being provided to hold the compass leg in any desired position of adjustment, which accomplishes all of the objects of this invention, and others, including many advantages of great practical utility and com- :mercial importance.
As many embodiments may be made of this inventive concept, and as many modifications "may be made in the embodiment hereinbefore shown and described, it is to be understood that all matter herein is to be interpreted merely as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
What is claimed is:
1. In a mechanical pencil having a body portion having one end open, a rotatable cup forclosing the open end of said body portion, clamp- .in'g means supported in said cup, a compass leg having one end pivotally connected to said clamping means and said body portion for movement intoand out of nested relationship with respect to the body portion, and means on the inner face of said cup frictionally engageable with said clamping means upon rotation of said cup in one direction to thereby preclude movement of said pivoted end of said leg and disengageable from said clamping means upon rotation of said cup in the opposite direction to thereby permit movement of said pivoted end of said leg.
2. In a mechanical pencil including a body portion having one end open, a rotatable cup for closing the open end of said body portion, clamping means supported in said cup, a compass leg having one end pivotally connected to said clamping means and said body portion for movement into and out of nested relationship with respect to the body portion, and means embodying opposed cam surfaces on the inner face of said cup frictionally engageable with said clamping means upon rotation of said cup in one direction to thereby preclude movement of said pivoted end of said leg and disengageable from said clamping means upon rotation of said cup in the opposite direction to thereby permit movement of said pivoted end of said leg.
3. In a mechanical pencil including a body portion having one end open, a rotatable cup for closing the open end of said body portion, opposed clamping fingers supported in said cup, a compass leg having one end pivotally connected to said clamping fingers and said body portion for movement into and out of nested relationship with respect to the body portion, and means embodying opposed cam surfaces on the inner face of said cup frictionally engageable with the opposed clamping fingers upon rotation of said cup in one direction to thereby preclude movement of said pivoted end of said leg and disengageable from the opposed clamping fingers upon'rotation of said cup in the opposite direction to thereby permit movement of said pivoted end of said leg.
4. In a mechanical pencil including a body portion having one end open, a rotatable cup for closing the open end of said body portion, clamping means supported in said cup, a compass leg having one end pivotally connected to said clamping means and said body portion for movement into and out of nested relationship with respect to the body portion, means embodying opposed cam surfaces on the inner face of said cup frictionally engageable with said clamping means upon rotation of said cup in one direction to thereby preclude movement of said pivoted end of said leg and disengageable from said clamping means upon rotation of said cup in the opposite direction to thereby permit movement of said pivoted end of said leg, and a cap adapted to be positioned over the end of said body portion closed by said rotatabl cup when said compass leg is in nested relationship with respect to said body portion for holding said compass le in such nested relationship.
