7 Claims.
My invention relates generally to pen and pencil holders, and particularly to holders capable of holding a fountain pen and a mechanical pencil.
One object of my invention is to provide a holder for a fountain pen and a mechanical pencil which is easy to manufacture, eflicient in operation, and economical in cost.
Another object of my invention is to provide a holder for a fountain pen and a mechanical pencil whereby the fountain pen or the mechanical pencil may be disposed alternately in a writing position with the least amount of effort.
Another object is to provide a holder for a fountain pen and a. mechanical pencil which may be used as a compass.
Another object of my invention is to provide a holder for a fountain pen and a mechanical pencil wherein the pen and pencil are disposed, either the fountain pen or the mechanical pencil capable of beingplaced in a writing position when the other writing instrument is disposed within the holder.
Other objects of my invention will become evident from the following detailed description,

Fig. 1 shows a tubular body portion I comprising two substantially semi-circular sections 2 and 3 (Fig. 2) pivotally connected at the upper end thereof by a screw pin 4. Ears and 6 integral with sections 2 and 3 and projecting therefrom have their surfaces slightly roughened as shown at I so that the sections 2 and 3 will be prevented from swinging freely. The screw pin 4 regulates the amount of friction between ears 5 and 6 and the projecting portions 8 and 9 of the nected to the member I2 by suitable screw means although any suitable means may be used. A mechanical pencil holder I5 is detachably connected to the member l3 by suitable screw means. Sleeves l6 and I1 surround the pen holder l4 and the pencil holder [5 and cooperate with inwardly projecting lugs l8 and [9 on the sections '2 and 3 to hold securely either the pen holder M or the pencil holder l5 when in a writing position. Fountain pen is disposed within the pen holder l4 and a mechanical pencil 2! is disposed within the pencil holder l5.
The fountain pen 20 is filled by pressing down on a plunger 22 in the same manner as other pens filled by this method. Any other method may be used for filling the pen. To fill the fountain pen 20 when the holder 1 is looked, a sliding member 231having a'p-rojecting'portion 24 cooperating with the plunger 22 moves longitudinally of the section Z-and is operatedby means of a screw pin' 25 which is guided bythe slotted portion 26 in section 2. The sliding member 23 may be secured in a fixed position by screwing the pin 25 inwardly. Any other arrangement may be utilized to fill the fountain pen from the outside of the holder.
' Any suitable locking means may be .used but I have shown in Figs. 3 and 4 one form which may be used. A lever 21 is provided with a head 28 which may be grasped by the finger-nails and pulled outwardly. An integral pin 29 projects from the upper end of the lever 21 and cooperates with a latch member 30 which is connected to the opposite section by any suitable means (not shown). The latch member 30 normally coop- (Cl. 33-27) r erates with the pin 29 to keep the sections 2 and 40 3 in a closed position. Spring means 3| presses against the lower end of the lever 21 to keep the pin 29 in contact with the latch member 30.
- A pointed cap 32 is shown in Fig. 5 which fits over the bottom portion of the fountain pen holder It. When the cap 32 is in this position, the holder l with the sections 2 and 3 in an open position may be used as a compass.
The holder I is ordinarily in the position shown in Fig. 1 wherein the pencil 2| projects through the free end of the holder l and the pen 20 takes a position with the pen point projecting upwardly within the holder I. This position of the pen 20 keeps the ink from running when the pen 20 is not in use. When it is desired to use the fountain pen 20, the lever 21 is pulled outwardly whereby the pin 29 is drawn back free of the latch member 30 which permits the sections 2 and 3 to swing apart. The sleeve I! on the pencil holder I5 is freed from the lug l9 and the pencil holder [5 is swung to a position shown in Fig. 2. The pen holder l 4 is then swung downwardly to a position shown in Fig. 2 and the sleeve [6 is moved over the lug l8. The two sections 2 and 3 are then brought together and locked. The pen holder I4 is now in a writing position and the pen 20 may be filled by means of the sliding member 23 operated from the outside of the holder I.
If a compass is desired, the pointed cap 32 is placed over the pen point and secured to the lower portion of the pen holder I4 by any suitable means although a friction fit is all that is necessary. The pencil holder I5 is then swung down which provides an efiicient and economical means for carrying a fountain pen and a mechanical pencil in one holder and which may be used as a compass.
Various changes may be made in the specific embodiment of the present invention without diverting from the spirit of the invention, or within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
l. The combination with a substantially tubular body portion comprising two semi-circular sections pivotally connected at one end thereof, two holders for writing instruments adapted to be disposed within said tubular portion, a writing instrument disposed in one of said holders, and a pointed cap fitting over the end of the other of said holders, the point on said cap and one of said writing instruments cooperating to form a compass. 7
2. In a device of the character described, a tubular body portion comprising two pivotally connected semi-circular sections, a fountain pen holder detachably and hingedly connected to one of said sections, a mechanical pencil holder detachably and hingedly connected to the other of said sections, and a fountain pen in one holder and a mechanical pencil in the other holder, said hinged connections permitting one of said instruments to be disposed in a writing position while 5 said holders on said body permitting one of said 15 holders to be disposed within said cylindrical body portion while the other holder extends outwardly from said cylindrical body portion.
4. A device as claimed in claim 3, wherein means are provided for locking said sections to- 20 gether.

The combination with a substantially tubular body portion comprising a plurality of sections pivotally connected at one end thereof, a plurality of holders connected to said sections, a 25 fountain pen disposed in one of said holders, and a mechanical pencil disposed in another of said holders, said holders being connected in such a manner that they may extend through the end of said tubular portion or they may be disposed 3 0 instrument disposed in one of said holders and a 40 fountain pen in the other of said holders, and means associated with one of said sections and cooperating with one of said writing instruments to form a compass.
