UNITED TATES PATENT carica.
ANICETO VISITACION, 0F BROOKLYN, NEW' YORK.
COMBINED PEN AND PENCIL.
Application :tiled ecember 81, 1923. vSerial No. 283,583.
To all whom t my concern:
Be it known that I, Amonro VIsITAoroN, a citizen of the United States, residing in Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of -New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined -Pens and Pencils, of which the .following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in writing implements and particularly to such as are adapted to be carried in a persons pocket, instantly available and ready lor use.
One of the objects is to provide a rountain pen, of substantiall conventional type, an eraser being remove ly engaged in the end of the barrel opposite the pen nib, the eraser being reversible to present elther ink or pencil mark removing surfaces.
Another purpose is to produce a pencil carrier engageable over either the penA or eraser holding end, said carrier having a conically pointed end in which a lead or like element is operatively engaged, and a cap for the carrier, acting to prevent injury to the point over which it is disposed.
A further aim is in the provision of a convenient and practical implement that edectively performs the functions ot two or more separate devices dispensin with superfluous weight and' bulk, combining all that is necessary or desirable in a single device, attractive in appearance and economical to construct.
These several aims and objects, together with others of a like character, are accomplished by the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawing, forming a material part of this disclosure, and in Which:
Figure l is a paitial longitudinal sectional, partial side View of 4an implement made in accordancewith the invention.
Figure 2 is a sideview. of the same, the pencil carrier being disposed on the opposite end ol the barrel.
Figure 3 is a side elevational View of the main parts in detail, shown in their respective positions prior to assemblage.
Referring to the drawing more in detail, the numeral designates a hollow barrel or tube, acting as thebody ot the implement, one end of which is contracted slightly and provided with a screw thread 11 on its outer surface as shown, or it may be slightly tapered to form one of the members of a 'slip joint as preferred.
Fitting the opening at thisend et the barrel is a double ended plug 12 having an annular band or ring 1.3 on .its central exposed surface, preferably knurled or corrugated to provide an efficient grip, the diameter being substantially equivalent tothe contracted end of the-barrel, the end or' which acts as an abutment for the ring.
Fixed in the plug 12 is ,an eraser, one end 14 being of sott rubber ada ted to remove ordina-ry lead encil mar and the other end 15 of har er material suited to erase ink marks.
The oppositey end of the barrelis ooned, as at 16, and has a screw thread 17 therebeyond, the same terminating in the usual fountain point end 18..
A pen nib 19 is xed in the end 18, the same being provided with a reed 20 leading from an ink reservoir 21 disposed in the barrel 10 and arranged to be collapsed by a bar 22, set longitudinally in the barrel and operated by a lever handle 23, pivoted in the barrel convenient of access.
A sleeve is litt/ed to engage with either the threads 11 or 17, the sleeve comprising a hollow cylinder 24.- having el contracted outer portion 25 provided with screw threads and a head 26 at its end, said head being so positioned as to clear the point of the pen 19 when the sleeve is engaged "thereover Eng @ed by the threads 25 is a second cylindrica element 27 and rotatably connected at its outer end is a cone 28 having a. lmurled or corrugated band 29 and containing an aperture at its apex through 'which the lead 30 normally extends.
Any of the well known pencil lead actuating devices may be used, as for instance a threaded spindle 31 may operate a nut 32 carrying a pin 33 on which the inner end of the lead 30 rests and by which it may be propelled outwardly upon rotating the cone 28,v relative to the cap element 27, the screw 31 and the nut 32 being adapted to be rotated by the cone 28. The space interjacent the element 27 acts as a reservoir for the leads 34, accessible by unscrewing the joint by which the pencil holding sections are united.
Fitted to slidably engage over the elements 2d`and 27, is a cap 35, which also may be engaged on the opposite end of the ilo` barrel, this cap having a head 36 and being provided with a spring clip 37 of the ordinary type.
In operation when the implement is to be used for ink Writing, the cap and pencil holder, as a unit, are removed from over the pen point and engaged on the opposite end in an obvious manner.
When a lead pencil is. desired, the cap is removed and the pencil used from either end of the barrel that may be most convenient.
The purpose and manner of use of the eraser will be apparent, as is also the fitting and feeding device of the pen.
When a lead has become too short for use it is Withdrawn and discarded and a new length taken from the reservoir by unscrewing the sections and inserted in the opening in the apex of the cone until it makes contact with the square point of the pin 33, at that time in a retracted position, and then adjusted outwardly b manipulating the cone with reference to tlie reservoir on which it is mounted.
From the foregoing it will be seen that a simple device for this purpose has been disclosed in the preferred form of its embodiment, but it is not desired to restrict 30 the details to the exact construction shown,
it being obvious that changes, not involving theyexercise of invention, may be made Without i conflicting with the scope of the appended claims Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is :-v
A combination fountain pen and pencil comprising a fountain pen barrel having Ineans .for supporting a pencil structure at either end, said pencil structure comprising a tip adapted to support a lead and containing a lead reservoir, and a sleeve adapted to support said tip on said fountain pen barrel and serve as a closure for said lead reservoir. y i
2. A combination fountain pen and pencil comprising a fountain pen. 'barrel having means forsupporting a pencil structure at either end, said pencil structure comprising a tip adapted to support a lead and con taining a lead reservoir, a sleeve adapted to support said tip on said fountain pen barrel and serve as a closure for said lead reservoir, and a closure cap adapted to engage either end of the fountain pen barrelor the pencil tip.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this application. n
