DRAFTSMANIS FOUNTAIN AND LETTERING PEN Filed July 729 1929 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Inventor Edward L .flelaney Attorney Patented Dec. 16, 1930 UNITED STATES DBAFTSMAN'S FOUNTAIN AND LETTERING PEN I Application filed .July 29,
The present invention appertainsto new and useful improvements in drawing implements and more particularly to a novel fountain drawing pen, the same having as its principal object the provision of means whereby may be used a considerable period of time without the necessity of again filling the same. V V i 7 These and numerous other important objectsand advantages of the invention will become. more apparent to the reader. after considering the invention as described and claimed hereinafter.
In the drawings: a Figure 1 represents a longitudinal sectional View through the improved pen. 7
Figure 2 represents a longitudinal sectional view fragme'ntarily showing one end portion of the same provided with a bulb for creating a suction within the reservoir and fragmentarily showing its opposite end depending into an ink receptacle, the latter being shown in broken lines. Figure 3 is a side elevation of the removable pen.
Figure 4 represents an end elevation of removable pen.
Figure 5 is a cross sectional view taken substantially on line 5+5 of Figure 2.
Figure 6 represents a fragmentary longitudinal sectional View through the dispensing end portion of the reservoir.
Figure 7 represents a top plan view of the air vent plug. 7
the
Figure 8 represents a bottom planview of the air vent plug. 7
Referring to the drawings, wherein like numerals designate like parts, it will be seen that the invention includes a hollow reservoir in the form of a barrel 5, enlargedat its upper end as at 6 and tapering at its lower end as at 7 to the point 8. A bore 9 extends on the longitudinal axis through the pointed end portion of the barrel 5 and as clearly shown in Figure 6, one side portion of the 1929. sri r 3811357.
.EDWARD L. DELANEY, 0F ELYRIA, OHIO, nssrenon o inn t]: A. DELANEY, or ELYRIA,
pointed-end is c'ut oifas 10, so. that the outer endof thebore 9 will open through one side of this end portion "of the barrelslightly inwardly from; the point 8. I a Theupper interior'p'ortion of the barrel is provided with threads 11 While the upper enlargedportion 6 is reduced at itsjends to provide an, internal shoulder 12. An elongatedplu'g 13 is'externally threadr ed for engagement within thethreaded up-.
per en'dfportionfof the barrel and this plug 13 is provided'wit-h a knurled head Mi 7. The
gagea'ble' with the shoulder 12 of thebarrel '5. Theinneriend of" the plug l?) istaperedas at 16 and anupwardly tapering opening 17 extends from the innerfend of the plugto' opening 17 is in the nature of a'channel communicating with the longitudinally extendplified inFigureL5.
ring bore 19 this being more clearly exemhead is reduced to providea shoulder 15 en- *A small threaded plug 20 is p'rovided with a tapering shoulder 21 adj acent its knurled edge22and this tapering shoulder is adjustable within the ulpper end of the threaded recess '18, as in'the manner as shown in Figurelw "IYRQY-" 'i I elongated needle valve element 23 depends from the inner end-ofthe' plug 13 and is tapered to a fine: point at-i-ts free endas denoted bynunieral 24. Thispointed end of the valve ele'ment-isseatable within'the bore Qatthe taperedf'and pointed end of'the barrel 5.-(- See"Fig.1-) l "1 The pen structure is denotedgenerally by numeral '25 [and "includesthe substantially stationary-leg26-and1the spring leg 27 both secured at their innervends to the collar 28. This collar is disposed in circumscribing relation with respect to the barrel 5 and a set screw 29 having a knurled head 30 is capable ofbeing fed through the collar 28 so that its inner end will engage the barrel in the manner shown in Figure '1 to prevent displacement of the pen from the said barrel.
A clamp screw 31 is engageable through V the spring leg 27 of the penand by grasping readily filled.
the knurled head 82 thereof and feeding the same inwardly, its inner end will engage the tapering. end portion of the barrel 5 to properly adjust the leg27. v v I v It will thus be seen that by unscrewing the plug 13, the needle valve element 23 will be lifted and a proportionate air opening or communication of the reservoir with the: at.- mosphere will in cooperation with the pointed end 21 of the needle valve regulate the flow ofin.
As shown in Figure 2 by; maintaining the valve 23 1n open posltlon and removing the" pen 2 5 the. tapering, end 7 of the valve may be dependedintojanink bottle (as shownin F ig .2) and byapplying a bulb 33to the head 14' of the plug '13,- bymeans of the threaded element- It is obvious that the. flow of inkcan be regulated with more accuracy by the use of .themeans explained above; than in the use of conventional 'types' of pens now in use, o
- and furthermore, this improved pen when filled with ink will not require filling for a considerable period of time thereafter.
' It is also apparent that the deviceoan be readily disassembled forthe purpose of 113E pair,,replaceme nt and cleaning of the various elements. The foregoing specification has beenin detail andit is to be understood that while the description has been specific, va-' rious changes in the size, shape and materials may be resorted to without departing fromthe'spiritand scope of the invention as claimed hereinafter. t o Having-thus described is claimed as new is:
A fountain drawing pen comprising a-bari rel tapered at one end, said tapered end of the barrel being. provided with a duct open- 1 from the inner end -of the said-plugv and; adapted to have its free end seat within the;
ing through one side thereof adj aee'nt its extremity, a pen structure'against which the tapered end ofthe barrelis': adapted to en; gage, means for regulating the flow of;ink-
through said, duct,'an adjustable-air admitv H ting plugfor thesaid barrel, said plugbe; ing provided Witha channel'extending longitudinally' therein and terminating inwardly of its outer end, anda needle valve proj eating aforementioned duct. o it Intestimony whereof I afii x my signature.
