IFEM.
speeiacauon of Letters rfi/cent.
Application filed November 1'?, 1913. Serial No. 801,470.
To au wle/0m t may concern Be it known that Fnnnnnrcn C. FENE- nnr, a citizen of the 'United States of lime-rica7 residing;- at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have innvented certain new and useful Improvements in Pens, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein 'to the accompanying drawings. v
tlf'his invention relates to pens of that type commonly styled fountain pens, andthe primary 'object of my invention is to provide pen that can be advantageolusly used for writing or printing signs, marking goods "er packing cases, or for producing heavy lettering or writing of various styles.
Another object of this invention is to provide a fountain pen having a reservoir for inlr or other writing fluid, and which is provided `with yieldable means for feeding ink in \suflicient quantities to the writing or printing point or member of the pen.
A urtherobject of this invention is to provide a simple7 durable and inexpensive pen of the above type wherein a yieldable Writing or printing member provides a plurality of ink hearing surfaces which permits oif vstripes or marks of various widths being made with the pen, the width of a stripe being defined by 'the width of a face of the member and the maximum Width of a stripe by the distance between the angles of said faces, l
l attain the above and other objects by a mechanical construction that will be hereinafter specically described and then claimed, and reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein- Figure l is a perspective view of the en; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view o the same; Fig'. 3 is a view of the outer end of the pen, and Fig. l is a detail 'elevation of the writing point or member.
A pen in accordance with this invention comprises a cylindrical hollow body or tube l constituting the handle and reservoir of the pen. The outer end of the body l is re duced or contracted to provide a frustopyramidical extremity having dat tapering side walls il, the inner walls of the extremity providing' a socket or seat 3, the purpose of which will presently appear. rllhe outer end j or extremityof the body 1 is beveled, as at et, the bevel extending inwardly trom thei top side oi' the extremity .to the bottom side thereof, the bevel or inclination being smh l Patented Apr., 21., fgjld.
that when the pen isvheld in the hand at an angle to a surface to be written or printed y I upon, the beveled end of the extremity en-y gages the vsurface with all its points of contact in a common plane.
The Walls 2 are longitudinally slitted or slotted, as at 5, the slits or slots being equally spaced and extending from the-outeredges of the walls inwardly to provide a plurality of 'equally spaced ink bearing points 6 and it isfn this connection that the slits or slots 5 serve practically the same purpose as the, slots and slits of an ordinary pen point,
Arranged in the body l and normally en gaging the seat 3 is a yieldable Writing point or member 7 which serves two purposes, namely, as an inl( feeding device when the pen is in use and-as a closure for the eirtremity of the body l'when the pen is not in use. llthe member 7 preferably comprises a cylindrical body of less diameter. than the.
bore of the, body or tube '1, thereby provid' ing an annular space 8 which permits of ink or Writing yfluid flowingtoward the seat 3 of the body l. The outer end of the member 1 is'reduced or contracted to provide dat tapering walls 9 adapted to engage the walls of the seat 3 and the tapering end or" said member is of suiicient length to protrudefrom the beveled extremity 2. The outer end of the member 7 -is beveled, as at 10, in
a plane in parallelism with the beveled end f of the extremity and thel beveled end of said member has a recess 11 providing Walls l2 that are similar to the Walls of the extremity 2. The outer edges of thewalls 12 are slitted or slotted, as at 13, tol provide a plurality of in k bearingpoints 11i, the slits or slots 13 registering with the slits or slots of the extremity 25 when vthe member 7 is e shifted linwardly as pressure is brought to bear upon the printing end of the pen. The Walls of the member 7 areslightly dared, as exaggerated. in the drawing, whereby the slitted outer edges of the walls 'l2 will .be
' carried into close proximity to the walls et the extremity 2, thus reducing the endof the ink passage between said member and the extremity, whereby just a suihcient quan# tity of ink will be'supplied to the ink hear`v ing points oit the penu f Y Suitbl'y eennectedte .the ,inner end ofthe sie ieui
member 7, as at 15, is a coiled compression spring 16 which is arranged longitudinally of the body, the combined length of said spring and the member being greater than the length of the body 1, whereby when a cap 17 is screwed or otherwise mounted upon the inner end ofthe body 1, the spring 16 is placed under tension to hold the member 7 normally seated in the extremity of the body A lishing a passage between the walls 9 of the member 7 and the walls of the extremity of the body 1, permitting ink to ow toward the ink bearing points 6 and 14. Ink is fed to these points through the medium of the slits or slots 5 and 13 and as lthe pen is moved over a surface a broad stripe or mark is made, as shown in Figl. ln making a plus mark the intersecting lines are of the same Width and in making a cross mark Without changin the position of the pen, the intersecting lines are of a greater width than the intersecting lines of the plus mark. The width of the plus mark line corresponds to the distance between opposite sides of the writing or printing points and the width of the cross lines corresponds to the. distance between the angles of the walls of the writing point. ln practice, it is not necessary to completely force the outer end of the member 7 into the extremity'of the body 1, as the outer end of the member 7 can be used for writing or printing purposes without bringing the end of the extremity into engagement with the surface to be written or printed upon. A slight pressure upon the pen provides suilicient space between the member 7 and the extremity of the body for ink to flow onto the ink bearing points 14. Immediately upon the writing or printing points of the pen being removed from a sur'- ace the spring 16 causes the member 7 to engage the seat 3 thereby shutting ol the flow of ink. i
l/lv'hen the cap 17 is removed from the inner end of the body 1, the end of the spring 16 protrudes from the body, thus permitting of the same being gripped and the member 7 removed from the body, whereby the body `can be llushedand thoroughly cleansed. 0f
course, the member 7 when removed from. the body can be similarly treated.
rlhe pen in its entirety can be made of a noireorrodible material and of such sizes as to be Conveniently used for various purposes.
@ne embodiment of my invention has been illustrated, but it is to be understood that the structural elements are susceptible 4to such variations and modifications as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
l/Vhat I claim is:

A pen comprisingl a, hollow body constitutingT a reservoir, said body having a reduced beveled extremity, a. recessed yieldable member noijmally seated in the extremity of said body and having a, beveled end adapted to be shifted into the plane of the beveled end of the extremity olf said body, and means longitudinally oli .said body for holding` said n'ieinber normally seated and to `facilitate the removal of said member from said body.
7, A pen comprising a hollow body hav ing a. reduced end provided with opposd ink bearing points, and a yieldablo meml'ier 'normally seated in the reduced end of .said
with slitted edges, and a. yieldable member arranged in said body and having a beveled slitted end adapted to be moved to and from the slitted extremity o' said body.
i). A pen comprising a hollow body oonstituting a reservoir, said body having an extremity thereof beveled and provided arranged in Suid body and having a beveled slitted end adapted to be moved to and from the slitted extremity of said body, and means arranged Within said body for holding said member' normally seated in the' eX- tremity of' said body to close the same.
