UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN BARTER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR "IO FREDERICK FEAR AND 5 CHARLES E. FOULDS, BOTH OF SAME PLACE.
THUMB AND FINGER GUIDE FOR PEN-HOLDERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 423,587, dated March 18, 1890.
Application filed December 7, 1887. Serial No. 257,173. (No model.)
To-all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN BARTER, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing in New York, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in WVritingDevices for Pen-Holders,ot' which the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to a device for guiding the fingers in a proper manner to write.
My invention consists of sockets of sheet metal, india-rubber, or fiber pressed or molded in a form corresponding to two or more fingers, whichever desirable. stamped, or molded sockets are attached toa tubular projection integral therewith, said tubular projection adapted to receive a device for holding a pen.
The drawing represents a perspective view of the device mounted upon a suitable device, showing the position in which same should be held. In the drawing I prefer to show three sockets, such being more commonlyv adapted for use.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the drawing, in which a,b, and 0 represent the finger and thumb guides. cl represents the tubular projection integral therewith. e is the portion inserted within said tubular projection and adapted to hold a pen. f is a device adapted to support the said sockets in combination with the tubular projection and portion inserted theresizes and of any material desired; but I prefer to have them of metal.
Said pressed,
These sockets may be made in many I am aware that pen-holders having an attachment for combining two or more pens. with one pen-holder and adapted for drawing parallel lines have heretofore been made; but I am not aware that a device having three sockets, one for the thumb and one for the first and second fingers, and the whole having a tube adapted to receive a pen, was ever before made or known.
I am aware that a writing device has heretofore been made consisting of a pen-holder havinga series of indentations corresponding to the writers fingers and thumb. This, however, merely locates the position of the tips of the fingers, which-are liable, especially for a new beginner,to slip therefrom. It will be obvious that my invention, being formed with sockets, as it is, not only holds the fingers and thumb in position, but prevents them from slipping and guides and guards the same.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and. desire to secure by Letters Patent, is.-
In a thumb and finger steadying device for writing, the sockets, as described, provided with a tube, said tube adapted to have a penholder inserted therein, which sockets, in combination with said tube, form acomplete writing device, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
JOHN BARTER.
