J. G. F. FLAKE. COMBINED KNIFE AND PENCIL AND ERASEREOLDER.
Patented July 11,1893.
VNITE STATES ATENT OFFICE.
JOHN e. E. FLAKE, OE CINCINNATI, OHIO.
COMBINED KNIFE AND PENCIL. AND ERASER'HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part 0f Letters Patent No. 501,225, dated July 11, 1893.
Application filed February 28,1893. Serial No. 464,026. (No model.) A
To all whom it may concern: l
Be it known that I, JOHN G. F. FLAKE, a citizen ot' the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Knife and Pencil and Eraser Holder; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, reference being had to the annexed drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an implement that includes a single-bladed pocket-knife, a pencil-holder and an eraser-holder, the details of said implement and the method of using it for these different purposes being hereinafter more fully described.
In the annexed drawings, Figure l is a plan showing the knife blade retracted Within its case, and the eraser-holder detached fromthe latter. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section showing a lead pencil and eraser holder fitted in opposite ends of the knife-case. Fig. 3 is a plan showing the knife blade protruded from the case. Fig. 4 is a vertical section through this protruded knife. Fig. 5 is an enlarged transverse-section of the case and knife, the slide of the latter being seen in elevation.
A represents a light case, which is usually cylindrical in transverse section, is open at each end, and has a longitudinal slot B, terminating, in front, with a lateral bend b, the case being traversed by a slide C, having a small pin o, passing through said slot, as more clearly represented in Fig. 5.
D is a knife blade that may be integral with this slide, as seen in Fig. 2, or it may be attached to said slide by a pin or screw, as represented at d, in Fig. 4..
E is an ordinary holder provided with an eraser e, capable of removing pencil or pen marks, and having an annular bead that limits the insertion of said holder within the case A.
F is the stub end of a lead pencil.
In the normal condition of this implement, the slide C is completely retracted, and the holder E inserted in the front end of case A as far as the annular bead will permit, as seen in Fig. 2. The holder now serves as a stop that keeps the knife D in place, it being understood that said slide can be moved freely back and forth within said case. the eraser e,'can be used with the greatest facility, on account of the extended hold afforded by the case A, which case also enables the convenient handling of the lead-pencil stub F. This stub is inserted at the back end of the oase, and is held in place by the grasp of the latter, said case being usually made of sheet metal.
To use the knife it is necessary only to withdraw the holder E, press against the pin c, so as to shift the slide C forward until it reaches the 'end of slot B, at Whichtime said pin is turned into the lateral bend b. Consequently, the knife is retained in a protruded Evidently,
or eective position, as seen in Fig. 3, and is not liable to slip back with any moderate use. I claim as my invention- The combination of an open-ended case A, having a longitudinal-slot B, a slide C, adapted to traverse said case, andprovided with pin c and blade D, and the removable eraserlholder E, fitting snugly within said case, and
serving as a stop that retains said knife in place, all as herein described and illustrated.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
JOHN G. E. FLAKE.
Witnesses:
