3 Claims. 01. 120-38 This invention relates to new and useful improvements in eraser holding devices and the primary object of the present invention is to provide an eraser holding attachment for pencils including novel and improved means for exposing a predetermined portion of an eraser from the attachment.

Another important object of the present invention is to provide an erase-r holding device including a tubular holder that will be yieldingly engaged upon the blunt end of a pencil and which has a longitudinally adjustable member therein that will urge an eraser from the holder.

' Yet another object of the present invention is to provide an eraser holding attachment for pencils embodying novel and improved means for removably interlocking an eraser with a holding element.

A further object of the present invention is to provide an eraser holding attachment for pencils including a holder slidably adjustably receiving a cover sleeve that is longitudinally adjustable upon the holder to expose an eraser carried by the holder.

A still further aim of the present invention is to provide. an eraser holding attachment for pencils that is extremely simple and practical in construction, strong and reliable in use, eflicient and durable in operation, neat and attractive in appearance, light in weight, inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.

-T-hese together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafiter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:

Figure 12 is a group perspective view of an eraser holder which is to be supported upon a desk, table or the like.

Referring now to the drawings in detail, and more particularly to Figures 1, 2 and 3, wherein for the purpose of illustration, there is disclosed one embodiment of the present invention, the numeral 10 represents a tubular holder having an inner end portion 12 that is adapted to be yieldingly engage-d over the blunt end of a pencil.

End portion 12 is provided with an internal limiter shoulder 14 that will engage the blunt end of pencil P to limit sliding movement of the holder over the pencil.

The outer end portion 16 of holder lilis provided with a tongue 18 that extends radially inwardly from the inner periphery of the holder 10 as shown in Figure 2. A U-shaped resilient clip 2 yieldingly engages one end of a cylindrical eraser 22 and is formed with a tongue 24 that is spaced from said one end of the eraser 22 so that tongue 18 may be engaged between tongue 24 and the said one end of the eraser to removably secure the eraser to the holder.

One end of a spring arm or pocket clip 28 is suitably fixed to the outer periphery of the sleeve 26 and the free end of arm 23 is formed with a ball element 39 that is positioned through an aperture 32 in the'sleeve 26.

A series of longitudinally spaced apertures 34- me provided in end portions 16 for selectively registering wim the aperture 32 as the sleeve 26 is moved longitudinally spring arm 28 through aperture 32 in a selected one of the apertures 34 to retain the sleeve 26 longitudinally adjusted relative to the holder for exposing a portion of the eraser 22.

Means is provided for preventing rotation of the sleeve 26 relative .to the holder 10 so that the aperture 32 will be aligned with the aperture 34. This means comprises a longitudinal external rib 36 on the end portion 16 that enters a longitudinal keyway or groove 38 formed in the sleeve 26. Rib 36 is preferably disposed on a portion of end portion 16 diametrically portion thereof having the apertures 34.

Figure 4 shows the invention in slightly modified form.

, In this embodiment, the outer end portion 1s of the tubular holder 10 is provided with a radially extending tongue 18 for engaging between the tongue 24 of clip 20 and one end of a cylindrical eraser 22 gripped by clip 20 all as vide gripping surfaces for a users hand which is used to slide the sleeve 26a .over the eraser 22 and end portion 16.

One end of a spring arm 23a is fixed to the sleeve 26a. The free end of arm 28a is provided with a ball element 36a which is urged through an aperture 32a in sleeve 26a and into a selected aperture of the series of longitudinally spaced apertures 34 in end portion 16.

Figure 5 illustrates the eraser retaining and exposing sleeve 26b in slightly modified forrn. Sleeve 26b is cylindrical and its outer surface is provided with outwardly projecting protuberances 29 to form a gripping surface for the fingers of a user as the sleeve is adjusted longitudinally of a holder, such as holder 10. Protuberances 29 opposite from the 3 7 7 may be formed on the outer surface of cylindrical sleeve 26]: or depressed from the cylindrical wall of sleeve 26b.

Reference is now directed to Figures 6 and 7, wherein there is illustrated the present invention in modified form. in this embodiment, the elongated tubuiar holder 40 is provided with a removable end cap 42 at its outerend.

The open inner end of holder 46 is adapted to be yieldingly engaged over one end of a pencil P and slidably receives a U-shaped resilient travelling member 44 having outwardly projecting coaxial lugs or teeth-46 on its limbs. The inner periphery of holder 40 is provided with longitudinally spaced diametrically opposed recesses 48 for selectively receiving'the lugs 46 to retain the member 44 longitudinally adjusted in the holder 49.

The legs 46 are camrned surfaced and the recesses 48 are complementally shaped so that the pencil P may be used for moving the member 44 longitudinally'in the holder'40 in a step-by-step manner to expose the outer eraser of a group of erasers 56 from the outer end of the holder 40 after the cap 42 is removed.

Figure 8 illustrates a modified interlocking means between the holder and the eraser. The holder b is provided with a'dove-tailed tongue 18b for entering the dove-tail end recess 24:: in the eraser 22b.

Attention is next directed to Figures 9, 10 and 11, wherein there is illustrated the eraser holding pencil attachment in further modified form. In this embodiment, the tubular holder 52 is provided with an intermediate partition 54 constituting 'a stop for the blunt end of a pencil P that is'inserted in the inner end of the holder.

A hollow cylindrical travelling member 56 is slidably received in the outer end portion of holder 52 and its outer open end is formed with a radially inwardly extending tongue 53 that is yieldingly engaged between a radial tongue 60 on a U'shaped clip 62 and one endof a cylindrical eraser 64 engaged by the clip 62.

The stem 72 is slidably received in an aperture 74 in member 56 and its enlarged inner end 76 is retained yieldingly spaced from the inner periphery of member 56 by a rubber cupshaped washer 78 engaged on stem 72 and biased between the inner periphery of member 56 and end 76.

Washer 78 also yieldingly retains the flanged portion 70 in one of the enlargements 68 so that in order to longitudinally adjust the member 56 within the holder 52, it is. necessary to pull the stem 72 radially outwardly by the finger gripping knob 30 formed on the flange portion 70.

A cylindrical eraser 88 is slidably received Within the member 84 and is provided with a series of longitudinally spaced finger gripping lugs 99 that register with a vertical slot 92 in the member 84. The finger gripping lugs 90 are accessible through the slot 92 so that the eraser 88 may be moved vertically outwardly from the member 84 to permit use of the eraser.

A removable cap 94 is engaged over the upper end of the member 84 to retain the eraser'88 within the member 84.

it is noted that the holders 10, 40 and 52 are of resilient material, such as plastic, so that the same will be yieldingly engaged and gripped upon the blunt end of a pencil. The spring arms on the sleeves 26, 26a, 26b can be employed for attaching the .penciland eraser holder to a users pocket since the material of thepocket may be forced by the ball element partially through aperture 32' and the aperture 34 in registry therewith torestrict sliding movement of the sleeve relative to the holder.

From the foregoing, the construction and operation of the device will be readily understood and further explanation is believed to be unnecessary. However, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, itis not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction shown and described, and accordingly all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the'appended claims.

What is claimed as new is as follows:

1. A tubular eraser holder. adapted to be slid at one end onto a pencil, a diametrical tongue formed on the other end of said holder outwardly thereof, an elongated eraser, a resilient clip straddling said eraser transversely thereof, said clip and one end of the eraser conjointly sleeve telescoped over the holder and eraser and slidable on the holder to selectively conceal and expose both said eraser and clip.

2. An eraser holder as in claim 1, said clip including a resilient tongue extending across said end of the eraser and together with said end of the eraser straddling and gripping the diametrical tongue.

3. A tubular eraser holder adapted to be slid at on end onto a pencil, a diametrical tongue at the other end of .said holder attached thereto, an elongated eraser, a resilient clip straddling said eraser transversely thereof, said clip and one end of the eraser conjointly straddling and gripping said diametrical tongue,-and a sleeve telescoped over the holder and eraser and slidable on the V holder to selectively conceal and expose said eraser and Eaton et al.
