;se ins rer, OFSYRACUSE, new YdBK. i
1T0 allwhom it may 0mm p Be it known that, 'I, Josnri-r J. FERRARI, a
citizen? of theUnited States, residing at Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements Adjustable Erasers, of which the following, isa spec fi-.. cation. This invention relates to improvements in erasers, and has forits object. toprovide: a
novel, simple and inexpensive; eraser .especially adapted for useinconnection with v typewriters.
'' -A further ob ect is toprovide means A. further object is' to provide a novel I. I
I serted 1n the head 9, themetal comprlsing and simple holder. for .the eraser. or
I adjusting the eraser relatively" tothe holder,'-
for exposing'one end "of whilein use, the said means capable of conceal ng the :e'raser,
Within the hollow ,ho1der for: keeping itclean while not in use, And 'a efurther ob- I ject is to provide means forfreadily and p removing "and. replacing" 1 the holder by means of a reciprocating skele ton plunger. or feeder 12, which consists of quickly applying, the eraser.
The various features'and parts of the in-' vention will be understood from the. de-' tailed description which follows,a nd by ref 2 i erence to the accompanying drawing, which formsfla part of the specification, and in which- Figure 1 is an elevational View showing the complete device ready for use. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section, taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1; showing the construction and arrangement of the parts of the device; also showing means for adjusting and holding the "eraser. in any desired posi tion. Fig. 3 is a view; showing the method of applying, and. removing the eraser from the holder. Fig.4 is a view showing modlfied means for securing thedetachablecap to the body of the holder. Fig. 5 1s a view,-
partially in elevation and partially in :section; showing a'mo'dified formof eraser.
In the drawing, 2' represents the hollow tube-like body loftheholder, which may be madeout ofany'suitable'metal, or celluloid.
One end 3, of the'body is closed, while the Copposite end 4 is open. In the preferredi form of the device, the end 1 is provided with external threads, to receive a detach- "able. tubular cap 5., One end of the cap is slightly expanded at 6, and this portion is internally threaded for screwing on to the body. The opposite end of the cap is pref-' nmnsrnnrnnmisnn.

through which one end of the jectswhenrin use.
I ratntea n neo, 1915i .hpplicatidnfiiedDecember 13,1913 Seria1No.8:0 6,357. I i
d I 'erably contracted to provide a dull point 7 a I ,havlng, a rectangular or square opening eraserS proor substance suitablel for erasing or removing ink or lead pencilmarks from paper. But I jprefer-to employ for this purpose spunglass, comprising a number of hairlike parts, whichwhen collected, asshown,
in Figs. 2, 3, and'e resemble a brush. s
9 represents --a hollow [cup-like base orhead, into which one end of the brush .8 is I inserted; After the brusheraser Sis inthe open end is pressed or spun at 10 for, contracting the'mouthand thereby tightly 'grlppin g and holding the ,eraser"- in place.
The closedend of the base orhead9zis proi vided with a hook 11 secured atits heel to one edge of th'ehead and havingitsfree or toe portion projecting transversely ofsaid head; -The eraser 8 is adjustably held in H a metal bar or strip' 13, which is .bentU- shapedat one end to provide a loop or stir rup 14 which-is engaged by the toe of the hook 11 of the eraser head 9. The opposite end of the bar 1 2,is fitted with a screw stud 15 which projects through and plays ina relatively long slot '16 formed longitudinally in the body 2.; And 17 represents a thumbof the tube 2, which permits the'plunger to r reciprocate, but does not allow any lateral play which might disturb the eraser. The
nut 17 whenscrewed down tightagainst the outer surface of the shell 2,: holds the plungerand eraser in the desired position. The 7 slot 16' of the body 2 is'of sufficient length to allow the eraser; to" be fed through the ,cap"5,;until it wears away. When the plunger ismovedaway fromthe cap the full dis- .tance allowed by the slot '16, theeraser is "entirely disposed within the holder and thus I may bekept clean.
-Fig. 3 shows the plunger 12 operated, to
its fullest extent for'ejecting, as well-as permitting the installing of a new eraser, in which the loop 141 projects slightly beyond the open end 4 of the cylinder 2 to receive the hook 11. After the eraser is attached to the plunger, these parts should be drawn into the cylinder 2 the full distance, for allowing the cap 5 to bescrewed on to the tube without distorting the brush 8. hen
' tion for presenting a new wearing point,
In Fig. 4 I haveshown the well-known bayonet catch for securing the cap 5 to 1 the body 2, which consists of forming an, angular internal groove 18 in the expandedend 6 of the 'cap, which engages a pin 19 carried by the body 2. This form of catch is eifective, and the coupling may be quickly made. 7
'In Fig. 5 I have shown an eraser 20, Which consists of an elongated stick of rubber, which may be made square or rectangular in cross-section, to conform to the opening in the cap. The inner end of-the eraser 20 may be secured in the'soeket of the head 9, inpractically the same manner as the spun glass brush 8, and the operation of the rubber eraser is glasseraser.
" Having thus described my invention What I claim as new and desire'to secure by Letters Patent,'is V In adevice of the character described an implement, a tubular holder therefor having a slotted side, and means for adjusting the implement. in the holder comprising a metal strip member slidable longitudinally of the holder with its shank portion adjacent to.
and parallel with said slotted side and bent at its lower end to constitute a. stirrup, the terminal portion of which is parallel to the opposite side of the holder, adjusting means for said member engaging the slotted side and adjacent shank portion, said adjusting means permitting the member toproject beyond the lower end of the holder to present an open eye extending through said member between its shank and terminal portions, and a hook carried by the implement secured at its heel portion thereto and free at its toe portion to pass through said eye and be suspended thereby, substantially as described..
V In testimony whereof I- aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
