Description

J. A. CRANDALL.
PENCIL.
No. 364,220. Patented June 7, 1887.
INVENTOR .dttorney WITNESSES II I I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JESSE A. ORANDALL, OF BROOKLYN, ASSIGNOR OF ON E-HALF TO CHARLES G. MORTIMER, OF NEV YORK, N. Y.
PENCIL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 364,220, dated June "7, 1887.
Application filed January .24, 1887. Serial No. 225,375. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, Jnssn A. CRANDALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Pencils; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the let ters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention has relation particularly to certain new and useful improvements in pencil-points; and it has for its objects to provide an extremely simple and cheap device, that may be readily attached to or detached from its holder and renewed whenever desired, as will hereinafter appear.
The invention consists, essentially, in the combination, with a holder consisting of an ordinary pen-holder or stick sharpened or made conical at one of its ends, of a small cap or cone constructed of paper or any analogous light material adapted to be detachably placed upon and fit closely the conical end of the said holder, the paper cone having inserted in an aperture in its apex a short piece of lead or slate pencil, as will be more fully hereinafter described, and particularly pointed outin the claims appended.
The above objects I attain by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the cone or cap attached to a holder; Fig. 2, a side elevation of the same; Fig. 3, a side elevation of the holder, with the cap in section; and Fig. 4, a side elevation of the cap detached from its holder.
Referring to the annexed drawings by letters, A designates an ordinary holder, having a conical-shaped end, B. I
G designates a cap or hollow cone of paper,
papier-mach, or any light material, which is adapted to be placed over the conical end of the holder A. This cone is made to closely fit the conical end of the holder, in'order that,
with a slight pressure of the hand, it may be securely but temporarily secured to the same.
In an aperture in the apex of' the cone or cap 0 is inserted a lead or slate pencil point, D, which may be secured in place by cementing or gluing it to the interior of the cap. This 5 pencil-point is preferably made tapering, so that it will fit closely and be held securely in the cone C. The-cones as thus constructed may be readily detached from the holders by a slight pressure of the hand as fast as the leads are consumed, in order that new ones may be substituted.
The cones may be provided with leads of different colors and degrees of hardness, if desired. The cones may be made extremely cheap, and will obviate the usual process of sharpening the pencil.
This invention is designed particularly for the use of artists and school children.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. As a new article of manufacture, a detach able pencil-point consisting of a paper cap or hollow cone, having inserted and secured 7 5 in an aperture in its apex a marking point or pencil, substantially as described.
2. In combination with a holder provided with a conical-shaped end, a detachable pen cil-p0int consisting of a cap or hollow cone,
having inserted in an aperture in its apex a marking point or pencil, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JESSE A. GRANDALL.
